It seems Microsoft is actually working on the first Service Pack for Windows XP. As usual with Microsoft Service Packs there's no new features to expect. Service pack 1 of Windows will contain a collection of hotfixes already available on the Microsoft FTP, linked above. However those hotfixes files are password protected so you can't use them, yet. | ||

In case you haven't relised, but Windows XP has reached gold code and code writing for this now has stop. This cos it has now gone in to production and any new code/ update won't reach the OS by time it is released. If they added it now production would have to hault, CD/DVD of already written OS scrapted and a major delay of the release of OS which nobody really wants. BTW I had access to this FTP site for the XP SP1 and counted about 115 updates. The files in that directory have been encoded in Winzip self-extractor format and have been locked down with a password. :( So there is no getting you hands on them unless you a code breaker of untill MS official let the public know there out. Until tehn we are stuck with the final code when released a week this Thursday. |

Note: For those of you who wish to secure your WinZip passwords greater than the standard level of protection... there is an RSA level PERL algorithm that you can use to encode WinZip archives with hi-crypto passwords that take much more than brute force to crack.
Where I got it? Don't remember... might have been in RSA's COMDEX resource kit. |

If it helps you guys they normally use 8-10 character passwords. I've used the winzip crack a few times while waiting on hold just to get a hotfix.
Personally I dont know why they password protect these.. I mean what is the point other then to maybe keep every tom & dick and harry from screwing up there system.. Personally I think they sould just make them accessable via.. hotfixes.ms.com and show a huge Disclaimer..like HEY buddy this is the hotfix you are about to download.. install at your own risk..etc... and let the public get the dam files.. But instead I have to get on the phone for an hour... explain my issues to 2 different people and then have them mail the dam thing to me...all for no charge. This costs both Microsoft and Me time and money... I've written Ms about this solution, as well as mentioned it in PSS surveys, both telephone and web surveys..over the last 3 years... well at least we have the ftpsite and if we really need it you can always crack the password... has never taken more then an hour.. course I run it on a 2x or 4x box to speed things up. |
