Microsoft's Chief Software Architect Bill Gates is repeating the mantra that users are to blame for insecure PCs, in an interview with a Canadian newspaper. This refrain is familiar to the INQUIRER: Gates said more or less the same thing when he addressed an Assembly of CEOs in Berlin a few weeks ago. The chief software architect (CSA.'.) told IT Business that perfect code wasn't the answer to security problems, but firewalls and keeping the software up to date were more important. | ||

The linux peopel already made a big stink about this over on Slashdot last week.
It was not very pretty. |

He's right though, and I've seen many times the Linux community blame admins/users for not properly setting up/securing their systems when they run into similar problems. It shows their continued hypocrisy if they fault Bill/MS for making similar statements that they've made in the past (and the present).
The user needs to know that it is also their responsibility to properly secure their system. They also need to be educated about how to secure their system. MS is taking steps to further secure their software, and make it easier to do so, but as long as the user remains ignorant of the issues or chooses not to take action, they are part of the problem. Even if MS (or any other vendor) secures everything as best as they can by default, an unknowing/uncaring user can still turn enough protections off to lead them to an insecure state. There are so-called power-users with broadband connections that freely admit that they connect to the internet without a firewall or antivirus protection, and they see nothing wrong with this, yet share in blaming MS when something goes wrong with their system. People need to learn to accept the consequences of their actions. |

First, he ain't lookin so, um, ok in that picture :)
Secondly, I'm surely not going to argue whether he is right or wrong here. That would not be productive. But I do figure he is going to take major heat over this statement, right OR wrong. TL |

I'd like to see the public reaction if Bill Gates had guts enough to state, in a press conference broadcast by the TV networks, that the problems they experience with Windows aren't his fault. It's their's.

| Bob, I thought Linux wouldn't get good scheduling until the magical 2.6 kernel is released. I think I'll use this time to terminate the system before it terminates me. :-) |

X - You need a balance. You need people who get work done, and you need people who care about the internals.
You speak of the MS "expert" who changes subjects when he get's past his level of knowledge. Understandable. The problem with most Linux "experts" is that they keep babbling when they are way beyond their level of knowledge. The latter situation is far more dangerous than the former. Being aware of your limits is the key to wisdom. I've seen no evidence to suggest *nix people know more about systems, but I've seen plenty of evidence to suggest they are willing to BS their way past that point. |

| Microsoft should have set as the default option (at least in XP Home) for Windows to automatically download critical updates and install them without any user intervention. You can set this to be done with XP SP1, but unfortunately it is not the default. |
