  Microsofts new shell
Time: 10:54 EST/15:54 GMT | News Source: E-Mail | Posted By: Byron Hinson

In one of the most overlooked cool things at the PDC (in my opinion, anyway), the new Command Shell that will be in Longhorn blew me away when I saw it.  I walked up to the booth asking if unix-like file aliases would be in the new shell, and was given a demo by the team that had my mind racing.

It's funny how some people don't even know that cmd.exe even exists. Then the concept of Windows Scripting Host is totally foreign and almost unfathomable. And now this is just gonna blow their lids!

Do we even need the new shell?

#3 By 135 (209.180.28.6) at 10/31/2003 1:35:36 PM
This is also pretty cool.

Ok, I can't wait for Longhorn. Where's the beta?

#4 By 7797 (63.76.44.252) at 10/31/2003 2:27:15 PM
funny:
linux is trying to have a nice and easy to use gui like windows
windows is trying to have a nice and powerful shell like linux

Speaking of Longhorn... Anyone know if the beta will be something MS will allow us to nab as a download?

No, Windows is trying to have a more powerful shell, like Unix.

#7 By 135 (209.180.28.6) at 10/31/2003 2:53:26 PM
I would make the argument that both the GUI and the Shell in Windows are turning out to be more powerful than what is in Linux.

I'd have to agree with you, Soda.

In some respects the Windows command line is already much more powerful than Unix CLI and shells. For example, you can't simply type "somefile.txt" and hit enter and have the CLI launch the associated application on Unix, but ya'll sho can on Winders.

Oh, so Apple is copying Unix now? Can't they engineer their own software anymore? hahaha

Get lost zelet, you panty waste.

#10 By 415 (199.8.64.215) at 10/31/2003 4:06:23 PM
lol ... is calling someone a panty waste a violation of the TOU?

#11 By 1845 (12.209.152.69) at 10/31/2003 4:07:50 PM
That probably depends on whether the powers that be get complaints about it. Using the f-word, though, is a rather obvious violation.

What's the difference between a Unix 'alias' and a Windows 'alias' ?

Really. I wanna know. I don't have a clue :)

#8,

"funny:

windows is trying to have a nice and powerful shell like linux "

And in the middle, covering both corners, you have MacOS.

Really, I'm not kidding :)

"However, I did see some messages about Firewire drives being trashed by the Panther upgrade."

Heaven FORBID you give the whole truth parker, like the fact that it occurs ONLY due to a problem in the Oxford Chipset AND only with the version 1.02 firmware in said chipset OR that drive manufacturers are releasing patches for said chipset.

Heaven forbid!

IronCladLou - Yeah, I'm a command line junky under Windows. There is a lot you can do from the NT command prompt if you pay attention. Still I think what this MONAD is talking about would be quite cool.

Oh yeah, and it's 'pantywaist'... :)

I think "panty waste" is an entirely different take on the insult.... :)

#17 By 415 (199.8.64.215) at 10/31/2003 5:57:02 PM
yeah, I like my version better!

#18 By 1845 (12.209.152.69) at 10/31/2003 9:27:15 PM
I think it depends on what your needs are. I have little need of a CLI. The only time I ever use CLI is for ipconfig, ping, and tracert.

In related (ok, not really) news, Apple has admitted that Jaguar is flawed just like @stake said it was.

So, zelet, seems your claims look rather foolish now about 10.3 being the only affecte version.

Anyway, all's well that ends OK, so...oh wait, I mean, since Apple has decided to patch 10.2.

#22 - should know by now that isn't something he's good at.

#26 - Hopefully I speak for all Mac users who agree that it is a stupid problem that should never have happened, but from a logical sense, which you tend to never talk about, it happens. We never see you talking about similar problems that have happened with Windows, if you did you would probably come along and do something like "Well the idiots should update firmware" or something as equally dumb. I'm not sure what all the pettiness coming from you is all about...but I guess after apple said it's fixing those security problems in Jaguar (which despite all you trolls saying was a disgrace, which it would have been had it been announced, this isn't actually the first time Apple has taken a week or so longer to patch an older OS) you have to have something else to moan about.

Perhaps you can have a dig around for other similar problems that have happened with the Mac OS, we know you'll find them, as you seem to keep a journal of quotes against Apple, which seems rather sad. Now for once, try commenting on the stories on the site, instead of trying to drum up arguments - as this site can actually be good a proper conversation and discussion, you should try it sometime.

#38 - but there wasn't much of an outcry from any quarters apart from Parker, who continually trys to find something to complain about. The patches are coming, Apple never said they wouldn't be, only a few news organisations thought they wouldn't - they were wrong, he was wrong. End of it.

#24 By 1845 (12.209.152.69) at 11/1/2003 1:43:52 PM
" they were wrong, he was wrong. End of it. "

They were right. He was right. Apple changed its mind due to the outcry. End of it.

I think that's what you meant to say, Byron.

oh yeah, that must be it - I stand fully corrected.
