It's not often that Bill Gates is associated with the free Linux computer operating system, Netscape's Web browser or royalty-free software, but on Wednesday he embraced all three. Gates, chairman of Microsoft Corp., sat through a computer demonstration running on Linux -- a competitor to Microsoft's Windows -- and the Netscape browser, a rival product that all but disappeared because of giveaways of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. Gates attended a technical briefing in Manhattan, where Microsoft and software rival IBM Corp. touted so-called Web services, software aimed at streamlining Internet transactions. | ||

It wasn't royalty-free software (nor Linux) that he "embraced," but a royalty-free standard. Kind of cool that the demonstration was done on Linux, though.... |

It's sad that the major press is so completely and utterly clueless about what's going on that, in a story about Web Services and all the great new WS-* extensions coming out and being promoted by the Big 3 (MS, IBM, BEA), all they can talk about is that an IBM rep used a Linux laptop with Mozilla (not even Netscape!!!).

That's a nice spin on reality, Byron. Netscape was losing market share to IE before IE was bundled in Windows. Perhaps you used NS 4.7 and IE 5 (released about the same time). Perhaps you noticed that IE 5 was killer (for its time) and that NS sucked butt?

| #3 Everyone downloaded Netscape before IE was embedded.... in fact even afterwards people still were, including me. Only after ver. 4 was there some parity. IE 5 was just better, not because it was already in the OS... if netscape was better I and everyone else would have gotten the better product. An odd comment coming from someone who works on a windows information site. |

| #12 Now I'm sure what you say it true... in the mid 90s I worked tech support for an ISP, it was standard practice to download a browser. And I worked with the dumb of the dumb. Now that point is moot, no reason to download a browser... why downgrade? |

#7 - stating a fact about the Microsoft/Netscape stuff doesn't make me a "mac lover" no more than it makes you a "bill gates butt kisser", I'm just someone who isn't narrowminded or bias towards one or the other, I just know the faults of all of them. Yes Netscape were very very slowly dropping users, but if you look to the facts, they lost majorly when IE4...not 5 was bundled with Windows.
So look to the facts as I don't think I stated which one was better, I stated about the way in which Microsoft got the massive margin they did. The wrong and underhanded way. This post was edited by Byron_Hinson[AW] on Sunday, September 21, 2003 at 16:58. |
