Silicon |
Posted By: Brian Kvalheim |
Novell has admitted competing with Microsoft would be "arrogant and pretentious" and that customers "don't give a d*mn" about the rivalry. Speaking to silicon.com at Novell's BrainShare conference in Barcelona, Gerard Van Kemmel, European president of Novell, said the company is in transition and that any move to open source products will be gradual. "Linux won't be implemented suddenly and Novell won't suddenly move to Linux. Linux is one part of the offering…it happens to be a hot topic, but if it boosts opportunities then I'm glad about it," he said.

LOL. Novell certainly gives a damn. They're terrified of Microsoft, and so they're using the classic "I don't care - I do whateva I want!" strategy.
Come to think of it, I didn't even realize they were still in business.

An 8 sentence story adds legitimacy to SCO's case? Jello, you sound like McBride. All I see here is a company sayign we'll work with whatever OS our customers use and our plans and what we think may happen in the future with Linux will not happen overnight. What the hell does that have to do with SCO?

Hmm, Windows servers have 57% market share, UNIX and Linux factor in that mix somewhere too. Um, what was Novell's marketshare again?
I wonder, Mr. Novell admin, did Ray Norda buy you off?
RMD, even a good number of tech people who live in UT don't know that Novell is still in business. Of course, most of them probably don't know too much about SCO either, so that might not be saying much.

>>> what was Novell's marketshare again?
Why does that matter? One good job is all anyone needs.

LOL monkeydog.
Seriously Novell admin - use your good fortune (finding a Novell job) wisely. Begin to educate yourself on the last 10 years of computer advancement now and seek a new job. Dont let obsolescence take you too.

mooresa56, why should he?
I am using my Vic20 and when I save up enough I will buy a Commodore64. You don't need anything else. Windows/Smindows it won't last.
btw, what is "Compact disk"? is that like my tape drive?

I've got to agree with custommz3, and I'm sure a few of the regular softies here are running Novell. It seems every time someone asks me to do something on their computer, I'm surprised to find GroupWare there... This includes people who work for FleetBoston, the DEM of RI, British Airways, and Brown University... And at airports... Jesus, it seems like everyone that I see that works for a large company and is working on a laptop is using GroupWare and Notes.
Bob, how would marketshare factor in? These systems are stll running Windows they just don't trust the network to MS.

jerk, if you are running a Windows server, you aren't running a Novell server. I didn't say what is desktop marketshare. I said what is the server marketshare. Novell's marketshare is very low.
To be honest, I think you are lying about finding GroupWare everywhere. It just isn't that common. Novell doesn't make much of a dent in the server OS market or the server collaboration/messaging market. They don't have an enterprise database product. I've never heard of large, well any size for that matter, deployements of their webserver. Novell just isn't a big enterprise player. They may become one again, but they aren't now.
Ray Norda did too many stupid things. The company is still trying to recover from his foolishness.
