Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing Initiative: Users Are Losers (Opinion) | |

As Microsoft embraces a corporate-wide Trustworthy Computing initiative, more people are finding themselves on the losing side of a relationship. Bill Gates (news - web sites) last year sent a memo to staff and customers laying out Microsoft's mission to make Windows software more trustworthy. But the time, money and people required to apply security patch after patch after patch shows that Redmond has a long road to hoe to fix their problem -- if, in fact, they can fix it at all. It's ironic that a recent Internet worm that crashed hundreds of thousands of computers running Windows included computer code with the phrase: "Billy Gates why do you make this possible? Stop making money and fix your software." It's even more ironic that tech specialists at companies spent hours installing a patch, only to learn that the worm ultimately caused infected machines to attack Microsoft's patch update page -- for the express purpose of crashing it. | ||

| I dont understand how the blaster worm was "crashing" computers. I mean yeah you get an RPC forced reboot but "Crashing"? On talk radio the other morning a lady called in saying the blaster worm crashed there computers in a small law firm, they had to buy 5 new computers because there tech support couldnt fix the virus. Any tech support that takes more then 2 minutes to MANUALLY clean the virus and patch a computer should be deemed incompident for that job. The Virus came across our WAN from HQ and spread like wildfire, but within 3 hours it was cleared off of all the PC's (200+) and the patch had been installed. Thats with 2 people in the IT dept. I had the complaint that since its policy that auto-updates not be running then they should have had that port blocked on the routers, but still...I havent seen a virus that was easier to remove. |

lol, what happens when the new computers get infected? Do they try a warranty exchange for new ones? :-)
I hope the new computers are Dells with on-site support included. If tech support like that is common, there's the problem, and MS should seriously consider mandatory updates. Of course, some idiots will just block all traffic from the update server and think they've triumphed over MS, while simultaneously they get owned by virus/worm.next. After which they complain about MS screwing them with a buggy OS. |

default user: I was wondering how "long road to hoe" made any sort of sense... I was just scratching my head thinking "huh?!?"
Long row to hoe makes so much more sense. |
