261 music file swappers sued; amnesty program proposed | |

The recording industry filed 261 lawsuits against individual Internet music file sharers Monday and announced an amnesty program for people who admit they illegally share music files across the Internet. The federal lawsuits and amnesty program are the lastest moves by the Recording Industry Association of America in its fight against illegal trading of music files on the Internet, which record companies blame for declining sales. Cary Sherman, president of the RIAA, said the civil lawsuits filed were against "major offenders" who made available an average of 1,000 copyrighted song files. Sherman also announced the Clean Slate Program that grants amnesty to users who voluntarily identify themselves and promise not to share music on the Internet. The RIAA says it will not sue users who sign and have notarized a Clean Slate Program affidavit. | ||

| I am not sure that this limits my exposure but I only get on Kazaa when I want to download something and then I am off. I also have a "dummy folder with dummy files" so no one is really uploading from me. I know this goes against P2P sharing but.... |

I've never downloaded anything using Napster or Kazaa.
So looks like I have nothing to worry about here. |

Whether you have to break a window of a car that doesn't belong to you, bust open the lock on the steering column, and hot wire the car to steal it or electronically open the car door and electronically key the ignition to start it, you are still a thief.
If you put a music CD in you pocket and walk out of Barnes and Noble without paying or download it from the Internet, it is still stealing and you are still a thief. The only difference in the above examples is the technology makes it easier to be a thief. How you got what doesn't belong to you doesn't mark you as clever, "smart", or "counterrevolutionary", just a thief. |

Huh? If you don't like the cost of CD's, then don't buy the fricking things. It does not justify copyright violations, theft, piracy whatever buzzword you want to use. Maybe that's black & white, I don't know, I certainly don't think so. But there is a clear difference between right and wrong and those people who download illegal music off Napster and Kazaa are clearly in the wrong. |

Most artists actually think that music downloading is GOOD for their business. It's the large record companies, and a select (powerful) minority that view file sharing as a crime. Talk to anyone in a non-mainstream band, like the ones that play all the bars/clubs that the kids are in ALL THE TIME, and they'll tell you that the internet, digital media, and file sharing has done a whole lot of good.
Soda: Never downloaded a single MP3 or WMA? Never (ever?) made a mix tape? Never recorded something off the radio??? ALSO - NOT EVERYTHING ON FILE SHARING IS ILLEGAL MATERIAL! There is a lot of live recorded material and unreleased stuff that is perfectly legal to distribute. |

dkg_coc - Who are you, the freakin grand master boy scout camp leader? I never said that I share the CDs that I purchase. Get a grip dude! No one in the music industry is being harmed by file sharing. And obviously I can't prove that to you, because you don't seem to care to listen. Fact is, I OWN (i.e. have legally purchased) over 300 CDs and I don't share that music with anyone. I've downloaded plenty of music, I admit it. I've used Napster, Audio Galazy, Kazaa, WinMX. I subscribe to www.emusic.com for $9.95 per month. I will continue to buy more CDs AND download digital media legally AND illegally to find the music I enjoy! Anyone who says that I or people like me are criminals can lick our collective nards.
Tell me something mister fancy pants... Have you ever heard of bands like Shiner, Juno, Dismemberment Plan, The Cure, Archers of Loaf, Hum, Centaur, Failure, Absinthe Blind, Alkaline Trio, Houston, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, The Promise Ring, Superchunk, Pavement, Fugazi, Toadies, James, or The Poster Children??? They are all (mostly rock, sorry no country) bands that have earned some measure of commercial success through hard work and good music, some on major labels and some not. And I'd bet money that you have not heard of more than a couple of them. And do you even know why that is??? Do you know why most artists aren't allowed to own their own material? Do you know why radio stations play what they play? Do you know why local music showcases are relegated to one hour per week on the radio? Keep your head up your anus, and keep defending the RIAA's B.S. and you'll never know why... |
