Critical Internet Explorer patch 'does not work' | |

A patch released by Microsoft to fix a critical security vulnerability in Internet Explorer does not work, according to security experts. The "object type" vulnerability was discovered by eEye Digital Security around four months ago. A patch was released on 20 August -- and then re-released on 28 August, because under some circumstances it caused problems for some non-default operating system installations -- and looks due for yet another re-release because it simply doesn't fix the vulnerability it is supposed to, eEye said. | ||

Prior to the release of the patch, Maiffret's team looked over the patch and didn't see any problems, but he says it was a quick "once over" -- not a detailed audit. "[Our] researchers were just helping out, it's not like MS were paying us for this," he said. Microsoft use external security code auditors, which in this case were not doing enough, Maiffret says.
Either way MS should have done a better job with this, this is unacceptable. |

LOL... we've got a lot more to worry about than a single patch not working. How about 21 other vulnerabilities:
http://www.pivx.com/larholm/unpatched/ If I made a habit of going to untrusted sites, I might be worried more... but I don't, so I'll sit tight until MS patches stuff. |

RMD, I think that you are missing point! this goes to consumer confidence. I understand that nothing and no one is fool proof. But for god sakes can't they test these things more? Take some of the 48 Billion and build a better testing center. Do something so that these things are minimized.
And yes I am holding Microsoft to a higher standard than other software developers, why shouldn't I? |

RMD, ofcourse they have a testing center. Probably one of the biggest in the world. But with that said it still unacceptable that something like this could happen. Not only that but it seems to be happening with some great frequency.
I will not put my head in the sand and say that what happened here is not a big thing. |
