Much of what Microsoft has done over the last year or so might suggest a company settling into middle age. It has overhauled its management structure, tightened its financial controls, expanded its financial reporting, started paying dividends and abandoned the high-tech currency of stock options in favor of risk-free grants of shares to employees. All the moves are sensible, pragmatic steps, but they have the feel of concessions to an era of reduced growth and diminished expectations for Microsoft, the premier technology growth company of the last two decades. So, is this it? Is Microsoft's corporate metabolism finally slowing? The senior management team at the company has a ready answer: not in your dreams. | ||

#1 & #2 Bill Gates never said "640k of memory should be enough for anybody". He never wrote it either - the stories that you've heard about him saying it or it being written by him in some obscure non-final release of a MS-DOS manual are completely and utterly unfounded. Whilst it is nice to tease him about - unless you have some proof that no-one else has seen - he has never stated that.

I found an article once that proves that Bill never said it. It was posted here last year.

It's easy to prove Gates never said that quote. Other than taking his word for it, and the severe lack of supporting evidence other than people on forums parroting it, just look at the quote and the accompanying date. The date often changes or is reduced to just a year, and the quote itself even changes. There are several versions of the quote.
Also, look at Bill and Microsoft's actions. They always go contrary to that quote. In their work with IBM, Intel, and Compaq, they were always pushing for new hardware technology that would allow them to make more capable software. Why would they even bother with this if they were content with 640k? |
