A market analyst is warning customers not to expect Windows "Longhorn," the code-name for the successor to Windows XP, until 2006. That date is a year later than Microsoft's most recent statements on when customers could expect the operating system to ship. | ||

As long as it isn't a command-line only OS where you can't do anything unless you're a programmer, Dvorak will have plenty to complain about.
As long as it isn't a Mac, Coursey won't miss a beat. As long as the critics avoid the merits of the technology and the issues the software seeks to address, they'll always have something to criticize -- like you said, probably the color sheme. The next likely candidates are why they only get 100fps out of the UI with a particular GPU instead of 150 and why one of the pixels that makes up the mouse cursor doesn't seem to be rendered correctly. :-) |

Benson is right... MS never said that win32 goes away, but they have said that there will be a new managed code API, written using the .net framework. The core of the OS is still written in assembly code, C/C++, and win32.
We'll be stuffing stalkings with Longhorn, x-mas 2004... |

| Let's just assume that the author is right. What would happen to those customers that purchased "Software Assurance"? Would the consumer be better off not purchasing software assurance (from an economic perspective) if the next version is more than two years away? |

interesting read:)
We do know that there will be significant changes in the LH time frame, more than that there is specific info available on planned changes from the winhec show. The storage stack will be changed. The driver platform will change. there will be a new Audio platform. of course we learned a little about avalon and aero. We know there will be a mangaged Win API for LH. We know that you can still program Longhorn using the MFC according to a presentation on PDC titled as such. (so that means at least the win 32 api still exists in some format. if you read through the presenations from WinHec. we know that MS is spending alot of time tuning the platform to be a Audio Visual platform. and a highly distributable platform. So all that said. 2k4, 2k5, 2k6, I really don't care as long as they deliver a Stable secure platform that provides the services without much worries. El |
