Microsoft Is Using Linux To Protect Its Own Web Site | |

Microsoft has made a big deal out of asserting that Linux is not fit for the enterprise. But Microsoft itself is using Linux to help protect its servers against denial-of-service attacks. According to a post on the Netcraft Web site, Microsoft changed its DNS settings on Friday so that requests for www.microsoft.com no longer resolve to machines on Microsoft's own network, but instead are handled by the Akamai caching system, which runs Linux. | ||

If you look at the reports, the data is intresting, The OS is Linux, with IIS v6 serving up the web pages. Does this mean that MS has decied to test and release IIS v6 for Linux? :)
That the way i read it. It looks as if they are caching the web data for MS, so that the DOS attacks fail, but the master data is not on linux, on 'images' or shadows of the orginals? This post was edited by johnnyq on Thursday, August 21, 2003 at 14:48. |

Microsoft has been using Akamai for like 3 years.
Akamai provides a system of mirrored content around the world. So that all of the load isn't handled by one location. Why are the Linux people so desperate for acceptance? |

I think Microsoft just uses Akamai for DNS resolution, redirecting/forwarding, so they can react to Denial of Service attacks, and DDOS's from worms and shiznit... I may be wrong though...
Why acceptance? Cuz Linux appeals to loners and outcasts... |

I have no interest in helping a MS vs. Linux word slinging, but there is an important aspect to consider.
A smart company, when evaluating whether to use another companies services, considers the technology behind that company. No doubt MS knows Akamai uses Linux to power their systems and MS seems ok with that. Whether you consider this to be USING or not, it is a supportive action by MS saying that Akamai's systems are good and thus, their systems (Linux) are good in turn. Just something to mull over. |

Funny, Wagner http://world.std.com/~mwagner/ sure looks like an IT jounalist to me. I'm pretty sure that penguins are much shorter. And in any case, given the ending that he put on the article (in next week's news ..., it hardly seems that he intended to make the issue a "supportive action". |

portrman, something for you to mull over:
A few years back, Scott McNealy ordered Sun's business units to stop using Microsoft Office and to stop dealing with vendors and contractors who wanted to trade documents with Sun in Microsoft Office formats. Business at Sun quickly ground to a crawl, except for those units which refused to stop trading Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. files with vendors. McNealy's new policy was quietly forgotten. It's really not always true that smart companies care about the methods used by their vendors and contractors. In fact, one of the most fundamental advantages of outsourcing is that you don't have to care about how a service is provided. The exceptions are when a customer is outsourcing a function that is regulated by government and/or restricted by another party, and when substantial staff and fixed assets are changing hands (e.g. the large "facilities management" style contracts serviced by EDS, Xerox, etc.). Customers who have some other reason to care about vendors' methods are either irrational or are foolishly outsourcing something that should not be outsourced. Ever hear of SLAs (Service Level Agreements)? The whole point of SLAs is that a vendor is free to use any method to deliver the service levels promised. Even if Microsoft were to evaluate a vendor in the beginning based on their technology at that time, it would be rare that the vendor wouldn't be allowed to switch all their systems to Nintendo 64's the next day, and Macintoshes the day after that. As long as the vendor meets whatever criteria had been established for performance, security, and availability, they could use Commodore 64's if they wanted. |
