It's not really about WindowsUpdate, per se, JWM. It's about Microsoft's patching methodology for all of it's software. Right now, Microsoft has about 8 different patching methodologies making a clear, consice way to patch your Microsoft software a little difficult. The "moron" SQL Server admins weren't wrong in saying that the SQL Server patch was hard to install (it's still no excuse, IMHO... that's what they're paid for). That's also why WindowsUpdate only updates Windows - it's set up for the Windows methodology, which is incompatible with Office, SQL Server, and pretty much everything else that MSFT makes.
By choosing MSI 3.0 as a standard methodology for it's product patches, in theory, all patches could be applied from one source - "MicrosoftUpdate".
Aside from that, MSI 3.0 has some interesting enhancements just for patching. This should be just what the doctor ordered.
