NVidia Dumped from Xbox 2 - Microsoft and ATI Technologies Announce Technology Development Agreement | |

Microsoft Corp. today announced it has entered into a technology development agreement with ATI Technologies Inc. Under the agreement, ATI is developing custom, leading-edge graphics technologies for use in future Xbox® products and services. "We're combining Microsoft's vision, software experience and R&D resources with ATI's pioneering leadership in graphics technologies to create innovative future Xbox products and services that meet the lifestyle needs of consumers in the Digital Decade," said Robbie Bach, senior vice president of the Home and Entertainment Division at Microsoft. "We selected ATI after reviewing the top graphics technologies in development and determining that ATI's technical vision fits perfectly with the future direction of Xbox." | ||

They already are in the chipset business for, I believe, mobile devices.
BTW, their graphics cards are chipsets as well. |

Any idea if ATI will also be taking over for the platform processor (replacement for the MCP)? This announcement only covers graphics.
Maybe both companies will work on the console -- NVIDIA with the motherboard chipset, ATI with graphics. |

| #5: I think MS's choice for ATI had probably more to do with a combination of better technology & a more attractive price. There's not too many other chip developers that could have taken nVidia's place. |
