AMD Announces Collaboration With Microsoft On Marketing AMD Athlon XP Processor and Microsoft Windows XP | |

AMD today announced that AMD and Microsoft® will collaborate on the marketing of the new AMD Athlon(TM) XP processor and Microsoft's upcoming Windows® XP operating system, which will be available worldwide on October 25. The joint marketing plans include select retail and small business programs and system builder and distributor promotions. ``Microsoft is pleased to work with AMD to deliver our customers a great computing experience,'' said John Frederiksen, general manager of PC Experience, Microsoft Corp. ``Windows XP and the AMD Athlon XP processor make it easier for users to realize the full potential of their PCs.'' | ||

| I think it has everything to do with AMD having more market share now and not anything to do with Linux... |

I wouldn't read too much into it. Microsoft is pretty hardware agnostic. Their goal is to sell as much software as possible, and obviously they want to encourage hardware upgrades because WinXP will run better and users will be happier.
With Windows NT they were intent on supporting some half a dozen different processors. But the market never materialized for this to be useful. |

| MS doesn't choose Intel processors. The market does. As an example that you pointed out lets take Pocket PC's. Originally they supported a ton of different processors, SH3, MIPS and then later ARM. What has been the best selling PocketPC? The one with the Intel StrongArm processor. They were faster than the others and had equivalent battery life so of course everyone else is going with them as well now as of PocketPC 2002. It makes it easier on everyone now that everyone is using the same processor as well. Had SH3 or MIPS had better technology then this would not have been the case. I think you are reading a little bit too much into that. |
