Novell snaps up Linux company Ximian | |

Networking software maker Novell on Monday boosted its Linux portfolio with the acquisition of Linux software maker Ximian for an undisclosed sum. The purchase of Ximian's desktop Linux software will complement Novell's efforts to sell tools for managing networks of Linux servers, the company said. Novell plans to create a business unit called Novell Ximian Services. Executives from the two companies said the union will help drive adoption of the Linux operating system in corporations. "We're extremely excited to join with Novell to pursue a shared vision of leadership in a full range of integrated Linux desktop and server software for the enterprise," Nat Friedman, Ximian co-founder and senior vice president, said in a statement. | ||

It depends. Did they pay $6 billion for this one? :)
Actually it's probably good. Maybe Novell can survive a while by selling Linux. |

| I was more optimistic about Ximian before this, actually. :( But who knows... maybe this will work out better than the WordPerfect purchase. |

I had great hope for Ximian being the champion of Linux that made it not as much as a Hate-Microsoft OS but rather a cool player and a nice compliment to Microsoft with .NET (mono) and everything.
Do you think Novell bought Ximian because of: a.) Gnome b.) Mono c.) The Ximian Installer Technology d.) Evolution c.) Other project(s) Something tells me, but I guess I'm biased, that it was because of Mono. I think Novell might see the value in .NET and want a .NET implementation for their purposes on Linux. That seems to be the only thing that's changed recently. Mono is set to release their 1.0 here pretty soon (before the end of the year). |
