Linux Earns User-Friendly Rating | |

Linux, once viewed as an operating system only computer geeks could appreciate, is today a much more user-friendly software that companies, public administrations, and consumers can master almost as easily as Microsoft's Windows XP. That's the core finding of a study published on Friday by Relevantive, a Berlin-based company specializing in consulting companies on the usability of software and Web services. The Relevantive usability study, which can be downloaded from the company's Web site, comes as numerous government bodies and companies in Germany's public and private sectors move to migrate their IT systems away from Windows to the Linux operating system, while others are still debating the pros and cons of such a move. The independent study focuses on the use of Linux in companies and public administrations, using SuSE Linux AG's Linux Professional 8.2 OS software with the KDE 3.1.2 graphical interface. | ||

Another sales pitch for Linux for free courtesy of ZDNet.
It's funny how ZDNet tries so hard to get people to like Linux and to bash on Microsoft, considering Microsoft is the whole reason ZDNet exists in the first place. All of ZDNets publications back in the days before they were ZDNet were all about Windows and PCs. Only a few years later did they start doing some Mac stuff. Now, they can't seem to bash Microsoft enough. I wouldn't be suprised if ZDNet had signs over the sinks in the bathrooms that said, "All employees required to bash Microsoft and promote Linux before serving customers" |

Since Penguinistas like to bash independent studies funded by Microsoft, can I start bashing this study that basically says:
"German research company thinks German-produced Linux distribution SuSE is great"? Let me guess, the German government probably funded it too [Obvious] |

I was reading through the forum, and there are a couple of posters who were critical of the study because they used a heavily modified Linux install compared to a base Windows install. I don't know exactly what that means, my german is not very good so I only catch bits and pieces of the context.
I didn't see anything indicating who paid for the study, but from the response to the criticism it sounded like they didn't care... that their purpose was to prove their pre-existing conclusion that Linux was just as good as XP. |

It is studies like this (trying to convince people that linux is what it isn't yet) that give Lunix a bad name amongst some people. I personally don't think Linux is as (l)user friendly as XP. But on the other hand its a LOT more fun to experiment with and gives me more choice. This post was edited by tgnb on Tuesday, August 05, 2003 at 01:47. |

Does anyone know who paid for this study? It looks to me the conclusions were reached prior to the study.
What government bodies other than Munich, and what companies in Germany are migrating. Want to bet that SUSE was behind this impartial study? |

I've actually had a far easier time with activation than I ever expected to have.
Just last weekend I replaced the motherboard and rebuilt my machine, and the activation went without question. To the guy who thinks he can swap a harddrive from one machine to another with Linux... Obviously he's not running X11. |
