Bill Gates' and Microsoft's biggest problem has always been how best to monetize its software offerings -- but the new subscription model could backfire. In May 2001, Microsoft Corporation announced far-reaching changes to its volume licensing program. Since October 1st, the company's new plan, version 6.0, requires corporate users to subscribe to licenses in either one- or three-year increments through a new "Software Assurance" enrollment policy. The Software Assurance plan, which will affect businesses with 250 or more computers, requires customers to lease the software with the option of purchasing a perpetual right to buy the software, in much the same way people now lease automobiles. | ||

I personally am interested in payin for MS software like this. My small company (which I own) will really benefit from purchasing licenses rather than buying their office programs for such a High price.
I don't have a problem with them charging so much for the software because I look at it from the stand point that if I buy someone MS Word with allows them to produce Documentation quotes and other things faster I can get a return on that money quickly. The Licensing will remove the problem of Upgrades from the picture. I have not seen that actual prices but I am not going to start crying like most people till I see the whole picture. I don't listen to any articles about MSFT's business practices because I think Bill Gates is the only person on earth that gets critized for donating money. |

The talk of going to Linux is a bluff.
Microsoft knows that. Look at what happened to Mexico's big promise. They ended up running Windows on all the computers they slated to run Linux. |

I agree with #2. Some day, enough people will get tired of paying MS for everything and companies will band together to create products that will compete directly with MS. Star Office is a good example. A free Office replacement that works very well. It can read/create Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents just fine. Once version 6 comes out, it should make a lot of people pay attention.
Linux has a long way to go still for a desktop solution. But with enough effort it could easily take on MS. For me, just running games would do it. I dont need Windows at home for anything but playing games, surfing the Internet or sending email. When game developers start programming for both Windows and Linux, you're gonna see a little change in market share for Linux. |

| StarOffice is pretty crappy. I guess my word files are different but they don't look good at all. And star office is a productivity sweet? THere is an oxymoron if I ever heard one... |

Anyone else notice this patten with MicroSoft.
When they first release a 1.0 product it's next to free and more of an add-on to an existing product or technology... and it does not really work beyond what ever the core of the product is, and usually has a ton of security holes.. The next release (2.0) is usually a reworked product all together that cost a little more, but generally works the way you might expect it too, and after a few Sp's in not so bad. Then around the version 3.0 timeframe they add some feature along with the patches and stuff and now want a serious amount of money for the product, as well as they try to move you way from the prior version. I've seen this done with iis2.0+\proxyserver1.0+\sql6.5x+\nt.351+\siteserver\exchange. I'm not saything that by the time they get to the third goaround that they dont have a good product.. cause usually they do. Just that the community and customers have just paid for the development cycle of the 3.0 product by spending money on the POS versions of the product.. Then again maybe I'm not making any sense. As far as the new licensing goes... i think a major backlash is going to be seen. Yes 1/2 the people will play along, but 1/4 are going to at least look elsewhere first, and 1/4 like my company are just not going to upgrade till the post winXP years. Hell where just finally all up on win2k... Ms neededs to realize that they are asking for money every 2 years, and that's how long it takes to fully deploy\update some of there software.. which means we never have a year where we are not upgrading.. either that or we are buying software we will never deploy. |

| Yeah thats true. But there are a lot of other companies that do upgrade every year. Wouldn't you rather please your best customers than your worst ones? |
