Microsoft is getting this unexpectedly good feedback from competitors, as it readies the next version of its Office desktop application package. The most notable new features in Office 2003 include the ability to save documents in XML (Extensible Markup Language) format in addition to in Office's native file format. This should allow data to be read by other software, such as corporate databases and customer relationship management (CRM) tools. | ||

I've been working with it for a few days now, and I do like some of the changes done in Outlook 2003.
The improvements in Exchange Server attachment, mainly the ability to keep NON Exchange-Server based email running but use other Exchange Server services is definitely a nice addition. I've just started playing with LDAP, which was totally and utterly broken in Outlook 2002. The new interface takes some getting used to, but does appear to be for the better. As for the rest, well, Word is Word, PowerPoint is PowerPoint, and Excel is Excel. To me, they write words, make pretty slides, and crunch numbers. Ho-hum :) Frankly, Office 95 did a good enough job of all that. TL |

| I think Outlook 2003 may be the perfect Hotmail client. You can (finally) set it to check every # minutes, and (HOORAY!) the Junk Mail filter works on it like a CHARM. The Junk Mail filter in Outlook 2003 is worth it alone--it really does a great job. I haven't seen it miss one or mark one incorrectly yet... and I certainly get my fair share. It blocks the images by default, as well. The performance is similar to that of Outlook Express. It's quite an upgrade in Hotmail support from Outlook 2002... it worked, but it was slow and a bit of a kludge. |

Well, I've got my concerns about LDAP in Outlook 2003 now. It's taking a long, LONG time to do lookups to the corporate LDAP server. At least it tries to work :)
This is just a Beta so hopefully this will improve. Microsoft doesn't have much desire to make LDAP work really well, for obvious reasons, but there are a lot of large companies that use it as their central client lookups so it IS important. This is one of the reasons, I think, that XP/2002 has been such a dud upgrade in the corporate world. TL |

upgrade from office2000? maybe next year after we have exchange2003 running fine, before then..forget it as there is little overall added value, though certainly there are some nice new features that will pretty much go unused as usual. If you on office97 though it's a worthwhile upgrade overall though, if you organization just moved to officeXP there's not much point. |

I hate to say it, but it's probably because it's not an _exchange server_. This has been a really weak area of Microsoft/Outlook. They do everything to make it play nice with Exchange Servers, but everything else you're almost on your own. It's really a shame. TL |
