If you don't like the product you're being sold, taking your business to a competitor is a good idea. But becoming a competitor may be a better idea.
That's what Apple has done with its Safari Web browser: Instead of waiting for Microsoft to update the aging Internet Explorer, it wrote its own software.
Mac users can be glad it did. Safari (www.apple.com/safari) is one of Apple's finest releases, an elegant piece of work that shows a refreshing emphasis on two often-neglected qualities: simplicity and speed.

"Safari can even use the system-wide spell checker to flag errors in Web forms, sparing you from riddling your Hotmail correspondence with typos."
That's pretty cool. Microsoft?

It's not exactly the same.. but you can SET Microsoft Outlook Express to send and receive your Hotmail emails. This means you can use the spell checker of Outlook Express. Still, tool provided with Mac OS should be very handy.

However... I always thought Microsoft sent a message to Apple buy discontinuing Internet Explorer. There has been a rumor that Apple would develop its own Office applications. When Microsoft revealed that it would not develop Internet Explorer for Mac, Safari was still at beta stage (something like 0.xx). The message behind might be 'I will not wait till your competing product becomes mature. I will discontinue my application produced for Mac OS immediately'. If that happens to Microsoft Office for Mac, it could really hurt Apple.

RickNL, my guess is that Apple will attempt to do just that--become completely independent from Microsoft (produce their own competitive office suite and possibly package it with new Macs). If the product is good enough, it might not be a bad play, but I think it is mostly motivated out of a resentment for Microsoft in the Mac community. It would be interesting to see how some companies would fare if spite and ego weren't driving forces behind their products....

Wow... the insight presented in that last post regarding the flaws that simply must exist in all Microsoft products, and for that matter all software products that are sold commercially, is just staggering. With that lovely interjection of total uselessness that you just blorted, I think I'm convinced that I'll stop using all my Microsoft products immediately.
Off to my Linux machine I go.
Please... constructive criticism is one thing, but a post that has already been done a billion times over by every other Linux loving zealot out there that thinks anything other than free software is simply crap, is something I don't need to read over and over again. Anyway, back on topic...

Guys, I think you're reading too much into the msft/apple strategies. I'd bet that Microsoft saw no strategic reason for continuing IE. And there definitely wasn't a financial reason. Knowing that... and still desiring the Mac to be a stable platform (not technically speaking) for Microsoft to sell MS Office... Microsoft gave Apple the heads up... and gave them time to develop Safari. These business decisions are not made on a whim, and not for spite either.
It doesn't help MSFT for Apple to completely die. The mac userbase is a great lab of guinea pigs.
As for Adobe's decisions of late... that situation is as simple as it seems. Apple sought growth and made a competing product. The market spoke, and picked Apple over Adobe. So then Adobe dropped mac support, when faced with the strong competition. Hey, Apple acquired and continued to dev a superior final cut pro. But Adobe has been building up their Windows portfolio for years now. Just go to the adobe.com site and look at their products. Most are cross platform or Windows-only. First person to determine how many Adobe products are Mac exclusive... gets a prize.

#3,
Office/Mac is a cash cow for Microsoft. Discontinuing it would be corporate suicide. To throw away that much profit out of spite would without a doubt cause major uproar from their shareholders.

#5,
It's been a long time since anyone really cared about Adobe's Mac Video Products. Adobe hasn't hurt Apple one bit.
Final Cut Pro has all but taken over the Mac video market simply because it's a superior product.
Basically, Adobe took their program and went home. And nobody cares :)
