I may have found a problem already, though I haven't had time to look too deeply into it.
After applying SP4 on a test server running IIS, PHP pages no longer deliver gzipped content properly. Mozilla displays it as gibberish, and IE prompts to save the file. When that file is run through a decompressor, I get the HTML output of the page. Odd. I've been at work for 12 hours. I'll look at it closer in the morning. mOOzilla, this is documented behavior for SP3 and later (where SP4 = later).
If you want to disable Automatic Updates permanently, you must use Group Policy. If you're not in an Active Directory domain, you can still run gpedit.msc on a standalone machine. First, you need to right-click Administrative Templates and add the wuau.adm template. Then, drill down under Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Update. Double-click "Configure Automatic Updates" and select Disabled. If you are in an AD domain, this can still be overriden by OU-level or domain-level policy, but otherwise your Automatic Updates setting will be preserved when applying SP3, SP4, SP5, etc. |

or you can brute it.. via setting the reg service key to an invalid service name.
You can also read update.inf in the service pack and remove the 200 registry settings related to both wuau and bits. unfortunatly unlike sp3, you cannot hackup update.inf in sp4 cause it detects the change, as well as changes to au.inf.. bastards. However you can tweek this if you slipsteam the install. course the gp is the easiest way :) Anyone else notice the interesting tidbits in the new EULA with sp4.. :) |
