So what does this mean for Netscape Communications, purchased by AOL for $4.2 billion in 1999? According to Netscape spokesperson Derrick Mains, it's still business as usual at the company. Netscape will release a new version of its browser in the next 45 days, and the company still puts a great deal of work into its Web portal, Netscape.com. | ||

montana, netscape is betamax. Now, just imagine if Blockbuster still had to put betamax tapes renting beside VHS. That would be horrible.
Standardization on IE is a good thing. There was a period of competition (just like with betamax and vhs) and the better product won. End of story. |

| #4 The funny thing is that Betamax was better than VHS; much better "still image" etc., what killed the standard was Sony decision to use tapes with just one hour of recording time. Another difference is that while VHS is just a standard licensed to several hardware companies like Sony, Philips etc. IE Explorer is avaialble only trough MS. Said that I am a happy user of IE 6; I don't mind the lack of Tabs although it could be nice to have the option. |

Fritzly - when I say "better", I take cost, industry adoption, availability, marketing effectiveness, etc into account. In my world, the "better" product always wins. So, VHS was "better" because it survived. This post was edited by mooresa56 on Saturday, June 14, 2003 at 15:15. |

Which means it wasn't better. mooresa56 is stealing my line. The better product always wins in the marketplace, the key question is defining what you mean by better. In the case of video tapes, the consumers wanted longer recording time over negligible differences in picture quality which means VHS was better than Beta. |

| The reason why at the beginning Sony used one hour time format was the huge pressures execised by the Movies Industry that, shortsighted as usual, was worried about this new device and tried to stop its commercialization all the way up to the Supreme Court. As for the idea the the better always wins I would say that sometimes this is true but sometimes is the strongest that win. Btw It seems that we are missing the real point here: VHS is just a standard and there are several companies producing VHS recorders, IE Explorer is a product "made" by MS only. That is why the comparison is flawed. |
