Microsoft is to acquire GeCad, a small antivirus vendor, in order to offer Microsoft-branded antivirus protection
Microsoft has announced its intention to acquire GeCad Software, a Romanian antivirus technology developer, in order to improve the security in its Windows platform. The deal, the financial terms of which were not disclosed, would add a team of antivirus experts to Microsoft's stable of developers and give the company the ability to offer antivirus systems across all its products, a spokeswoman said. Security experts from the 100-employee company will also work to make Windows work better with third-party antivirus vendors' products, Microsoft said.

All Windows products should have basic anti-virus. However, McAfee and Norton offer value-added services.
How many people who use Terminal Services also buy MetaFrame from Citrix? I would argue a large percentage. I think that McAfee and Norton sales will go up as a result of this. |

| GAH! Not McAfee...nothing but trouble. Norton is ok, but misses some stuff (but not usually for very long.) Personally, I like SOPHOS. |

| I personally think companies like Symantec and McAfee actually pay someone or some people on a team to CREATE virus' to spread on the internet so that they can provide the patch to stop it. This way they can keep themselves in business. |

I have heard rumors, that most of the viruses out there are created by people employed by the virus scan companies. It keeps them selling product.

#3, have you checked out http://www.avast.com ?
I don't know how they will licence the final product, but they have a Linux server edition currently in Beta that you may want to check out.
