Purveyors and consumers of Web content and software, already unsettled by the peace pact between arch rivals Microsoft and AOL Time Warner, may be in store for an even more radical upset: The end of Microsoft's standalone Internet Explorer browser. Brian Countryman, Internet Explorer program manager, said in a May 7 Web chat posted to Microsoft's Web site that the software maker is phasing out standalone versions of its Web browser. | ||

I cannot see Microsoft pulling this off. They have too many operating systems, with a typical 3 year gap between versions. It would be terrible if an upgrade to the client OS (successor to XP) released a new browser, but that browser would not be available for servers (successor to Windows 2003) for another year or so. This would be a literal nightmare for web developers and other software vendors!
If they do do this, how long will it be until they do this to other middleware components such as MDAC, XML, .... This trend is not good for the industry, and I certainly hope that if the Department of Justice is encouraging this, that they back off. |

" The Media Player has been a part of the OS since 3.0 and it should be. I would rather have a standard media player that I can download codecs for real mp3 and winamp quicktime files even if I had to pay for it. I'd rather not but they could add other functions tpo the player through a download of their apis to media player.

| Does this mean MS will add(imbed) these applications in the OS? |
