STEVE BALLMER, the Vole's whirling, sweat-machine monkey-boy CEO, seems to have struck out in Munich. That is the third-largest cityscape in Germany, gentle readers. As such, it's a major loss for Microsoft. The story goes that Ballmer interrupted his skiing vacation to drop into Munich and offer them a 90% discount on Microsoft's software, countering that city's Linux and Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) procurement. It would seem that Ballmer's "generous" offer will not be successful.

Interesting you didn't pick up the most. But I guess that logic of the Linux zealot would argue that Linux is less buggy than windows to (your man Flight is going down in flames over at: http://www.activewin.com/awin/comments.asp?HeadlineIndex=18057&Group=1)
The question is, who made the decision...someone who made the decision based on fact, ROI numbers, features, manageability, etc...or OS religion, political views, or past working experience. I would be very interested to see his/her past work history or hobbies...anyone know where I can find that?
Regarding municipal governments, I don't care what OS they use as long as it is useful and stable. Municipal governments have a tendency of slow innovation (not all of them, at least in the US)...so maybe an OS trying to compete by being "good enough" (Windows-3 years) won't measurably impact the services they provide. Now running a flexible multibillion dollar company (or a small business) with a platform (take Linux, as an example) that is harder to deploy (server and desktop), less usable (really, you can’t even argue on this one), and doesn’t even come close to the management capabilities as the Windows platform (SMS 2003, ADS, roaming profiles, RIS, AD, etc. etc. etc.)
And before you go saying Linux is winning or taking over the world...please give the percentage of cities with technology running on Linux to those on MS or other proprietary software. MS likes competition, so I am all for Linux moving up to the 2% mark on OS share.
#3, if you really believe that one defeat means a CEO should resign...actually, I can’t even respond to this...because it is almost as mindless as comment #4.

If Mûnchen decides to go with Linux, then the story should be titled, Mûnchen loses big by not choosing Microsoft.

The "network effect"... just because an article speculates on something...doesn't predict the future. Think!
Do you think Ballmer sold forty million shares because Munich was going to not use Windows...Think!
As for my other comments...anyone know the Munich's BDM or advisor's work history? I sure would like to know.

I see this as a good thing. Even a market this big doesn't really hurt Microsoft in the big picture, and it will provide an interesting test case for all the Linux zealots who insist Linux is the best solution.

splinter3k - Yeah the dollar sign thing is a sign you are arguing with elementary school students.
RMD - I agree. This is pretty much a non-event. As I've said all along, the global computing market is huge, even a 1% share is a considerable amount of income to a company.
I see no tidal wave here. Cities have switched to Linux in the past, most of them have switched back. Ohwell.

Rhetorical Question: How many times is this same story going to be posted here? It happened months ago and has been posted no less than three times (probably closer to six, but I don't feel like looking it up).
Satirical Comment: If twenty stories about the exact same event are written, do they constitute the tidal wave to which so many authors seem to refer?
AW News Posting Policy Criticism: Brian, Mr. MVP, Mr. I've been an AW member for ages and ages, you should be ashamed of yourself for posting this article.

Could you please post a link to a survey or analysis that supports that statment?

humor: "Interesting you didn't pick up the most."
Exactly what did I say to make you think I didn't? Sounds to me like YOU're teh zealot!
I only stated it was interesting.
"Your man Flight is going down in flames over at.."
What makes you think Flight is "my man"? And why would i care where he is involved in a flamewar?
Are you on drugs, humor?
sodablue:
"Cities have switched to Linux in the past, most of them have switched back. Ohwell."
Oh really? could you please provide some links as the source of your claim that most cities that have previously switched to linux have switched back to Windows? Or maybe you're doing drugs together with humor?
BobSmith:
"Rhetorical Question: How many times is this same story going to be posted here?"
This story was only posted once in the past stating that Munich was considering a switch. Now this is the follow up story. Is there something wrong with that?
"AW News Posting Policy Criticism: Brian, Mr. MVP, Mr. I've been an AW member for ages and ages, you should be ashamed of yourself for posting this article."
LOL nice constructive criticism. Why don't you make your own website and do better?
You should chill out and do some drugs with sodablue and humor.

How many times is this same story going to be posted here?
One time, which was the one I just posted. Steve Ballmer JUST left Munich this week missing the deal and selling his shares of stock. In fact, the city JUST confirmed it publicly today:
http://asia.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=technologyNews&storyID=2836822
It happened months ago and has been posted no less than three times (probably closer to six, but I don't feel like looking it up).
Wrong again. How could this have been posted months ago when it was just announced this week? Can I have what you are smoking?
AW News Posting Policy Criticism: Brian, Mr. MVP, Mr. I've been an AW member for ages and ages, you should be ashamed of yourself for posting this article.
Can you explain why I should be ashamed about posting a story that JUST came out and actually JUST happened? I would be happy to listen. BTW, what does being an AW member for ages have to do with anything?

(btw, I have been visiting this site since it's inception, back when Stefan98.com was popular. But again, there is no point to these STATISTICS, as I only post current and factual news items. I'm glad to see the REST of the AW Commenters in this thread see that you are a bit delusional.)

But Bluesky, that was MONTHS ago and has been posted upwards of 6 times on this site, MONTHS ago.
How is it that asia.reuters.com JUST found it out NOW, when it was posted MONTHS ago? And happened MONTHS ago?

shao - Yeah, there have been Buy USA campaigns in the states before. They've largely failed. People still aren't buying Ford over Honda.

linuxhippie - Thank you, although I'm familiar with the Largo one, the others are short on details.
Still the Mexico conversion is typical of Linux success stories.
