WOW.... those graphics are INCREDIBLE.

| JWM: Writing to the specific hardware. Everything in the X-Box is dedicated to playing that game, etc.... Can't do that with a PC. |

JWM: The PC architecture and OS on top was not designed for just gaming, it was designed to do many different tasks.
The X-Box architecture, while similar to that of the PC but not exact, was designed for nothing but gaming, as was the stripped out Win2k kernel it uses. |

| What I want in Longhorn is for MS to develop a "gaming mode", if you will... say you fire up a game, Windows shutsdown any services and functions that are not needed to run the game. |

It's quite simple:
(1) XBox games (Doom III) run at a much lower resolution (640x480 in most cases). (2) Doom III will no doubt use all the power of the GPU inside XBox like those vertex shaders while your RTCW's old Q3 engine does not know how to do it. |

Guys... you're all missing the point.
It's not the Xbox hardware that makes the difference... it's the software! Developers know EXACTLY what the Xbox has in it, so they can optimize their code a LOT more than developers targeting PCs. When I write for a PC, all my code needs to work on the lowest common denomenator. I can provide optimized pieces for certain popular hardware combinations, but it all comes down to time and money. I need to make it good for most, better for some. With the Xbox, I write to 1 highly optimized API. I can use 100% of the features that API provides. I don't have to worry about anything except making the game as good as it possibly can be on that single hardware config. I can spend a LOT of time making the whole game great. That's what makes the difference. That's why a game running on a $179.99 console can look better than a game running on a $3500 PC. |

| Ports are a whole different ball game, and are somewhat irrelevant. |
