From a support tech's point of view, one of the most useful new features in Windows XP is the Remote Desktop feature. With it, you can remotely access a Windows XP workstation without having to personally visit the user's desk. Almost everything you can do sitting in front of the machine, you can do from the relative comfort of your cubicle. If there's one major drawback to Remote Desktop, though, it's that you need to be running Windows XP from the machine you're on to access the remote Windows XP workstation. | ||

| First of all, Remote Desktop is only supported in XP Pro not home. Second, pop the XP CD into any Windows machine and you can install the remote desktop client. |

I didn't read the actual article, but the preview, at least, is incorrect.
All you need is the Microsoft RDC Client. And the RDC Client will also log into older NT4 and Win2K TS sessions. Microsoft even released an EXCELLENT one for MacOS X (which simply astonishes me to no end). Microsoft has done a nice job with RDC in XP Pro, and the various clients. This is another nail in the coffin of the XP 'Home' IMHO. -Larry |

VNC is ok, but from a performance standpoint RDC beats it all to hell.

Just based on the blurb I can tell that this article is full of crap. You don't even need to install the client. This can all be done in the browser (provided that you have a web server).

VNC is S-L-O-W.
It can't even really be compared to Terminal Services or Remote Desktop. |

VNC blows puppy chunks. It's just about the worst remoting solution you could possibly ever use, the only redeeming quality it has is that it's free.
We used it here on a couple of NT4 development servers, but on production machines we went out and bought PCAnywhere. With Win2k machines we use terminal services. I use Remote Desktop on my XP machine to get back to it from anywhere in the company. The Remote Desktop Client has been available for NT/2k/etc since the XP launch. |

| We use it because VNC is free and we weren't about to go out and buy 300 PCAnywhere licenses. If we were all on NT, 2000, or XP here, we'd use Remote Desktop or TS. Such is the penalty for working for a company that is a little on the slow side of adaptation... |

The problem with RDC as a support tool is that it logs out the local user, and they can't see what you are doing. If you're trying to demonstrate a fix or if your client is paranoid, it just won't cut the mustard.
Remote assistance is a better way to go, but it requires XP on both ends of the connection. |

You are absolutely correct. I have to use it 6-12 times a day to remotely service machines. But since our platform is Win2K it's what I have to use. TL |

Yeah remote desktop rocks...
The only thing I wish it did was not lockout the user. Or have an option for leaving the video and sound at the workstation you are connecting to. I built an HTPC (Home Theater PC) and it would rock if I could control everything through my remote desktop connected tablet pc (BIG Expensive Remote Control). I can't do this at this point which kind of sucks. I agree there should be a tool to let an administrator get control of the screen. Peace, RA |
