Quarter of NT apps won't run on Server 2003 | |

Windows Server 2003 is supposed to be the product that finally persuades NT4 users to upgrade - yet many who do will find some of their applications will no longer work. Less than three-quarters of Windows NT4 applications are likely to run on Windows Server 2003, creating a significant barrier to adoption for administrators who still run NT4 -- the very people that Microsoft wants to attract with the new operating system. | ||

Won't run (warning pops up by Win2K3), or Can't run (crashes, won't install, etc)?
There's a big difference. I know that MS is trying to usher out the days of Rebooting after install, and just dumping all your DLLs into System32, is this the cause? These apps that won't run are not secure and were not designed with security in mind (yes, Exchange 2K pre-SP3 could probably be categorized in this too) |

This just in: some Window 3.11 for workgroup apps won't run on Win2k3.
At some point in time you have to cut support for some legacy functionality inorder to move forward. There is no way that you can support all of the legacy needs and make progress on the security front (other than running them virtually). |

| I just upgrade to VMWare 4... nice, very nice! Also seems faster, but that might be because I am running Windows 2003 host and guest now instead of WinXP as host and Win2k as guest. |

At the server2003 launch i went to, microsoft said 200 programs are certified on server2003, and another 20,000 (or so) apps are awaiting certification. So this might all be premature. When xp launched one of the first updates was an appcompat update that let xp work with a bunch of previously incompatible programs.

Porting to Unix is seldom a wise move, especially in this case where the work would be 100 times greater in cost. |

Several people said that it was a marketing issue. OK, not supporting previous versions of its own products could be a marketing strategy of Microsoft that would yield some customers to upgrade to newer versions of the product that are compatible with Windows 2003 server.
However, here what we are talking about are not only Microsoft products that won't work under Windows 2003 but also the products of some other companies. Is Microsoft trying to market the newer versions of the products that belong to other companies? I'd doubt it. I think the buttom line is the cost of supporting every single application which were originally designed for Windows NT or Windows 2000. At some point you have to make a decision of this support. It's not logical to develop a new operating system which will run exactly like Windows NT and exactly like Windows 2000 and then again be itself. It's now also the responsibility of the companies that produce those applications to release a patch (update/upgrade) which will make their applications compatible with Windows 2003. |
