Windows XP right click gobbles up CPU time | |

A MESSAGE on the Neohapsis bulletin board said that using Windows Explorer and right clicking on a file gobbles up the CPU to the tune of 100%. Mark Luczkowski says the problem only happens when you select files with a right click of the mouse, not having selected the file with a left click first. He says that the problem can be reproduced on both Pentium III and Pentium 4 machines, and we've certainly reproduced it here at the INQ. | ||

| I haven't been able to reproduce it. But then all of my machines have been tweaked with my "Make XP fast by removing CTF" tweak, which I suspect is related. :) |

I've confirmed the problem exists on both my Pentium 4 2.4Ghz and my Athlon 1.2Ghz.
The CPU shoots to the high 90's if you right click on an icon inside a folder that wasn't previously selected. This doesn't appear to affect overall system performance, though. Anyway, I just turned off the transition effects and now it stays below 5%. |

We haven't found this problem on any of our systems in our XP test lab. Varying from 200mhz 80mb to Top P4 Machines.
I suspect that these users have utilities/DLLS added are registered to the right context menu. This is not a XP Issue and I get tired of these types of reports. |

#11 - Must be.
I don't know, I'm just not seeing this. I don't have anything extra installed to start menus. I get options of Scan with Norton Antivirus or Open with Ultraedit and that's it. I have the Fade Effect turned on, I have Cleartype turned on. Now my explorer is using the classic mode, with details and small icons. I'm sure I've turned off thumbnails and other such things. |

I get it on my 2GHz P4. #11 is correct. I have WinRAR installed and it adds to the right-click menu. And WinRAR is also installed on the system from the neowin screenshot.
Basically, if you hold the right click... the cpu stays at 100% and 95% of it is explorer.exe This could have a big effect, if you had WinRAR on your webserver or dbserver and you right-clicked something. I would imagine your users would experience some slowness. |

My P41.8 with 512pc800 when right clicking will take up to 5 seconds sometimes...

I do not have WinRAR installed, and am affected by this stupid little bug(?). I have PowerArchiver installed which can open a RAR or compress in about a zillion formats. Definitely, this isn't a big deal, but it is annoying.
UPDATE: turning off transitional effects does fix the problem. Man, that's weird. This post was edited by Cthulhu on Sunday, April 27, 2003 at 21:38. |

Hmmm, I get a sub 1 second spike and then nothing... I don't think this is a big deal if it spikes for 1 sec...

| i have a fresh install of xp and this happens to me. i have a pIII mobile. i noticed awhile ago that if i'm running windows media player and i right click on a file that the music would cut out until i closed the context menu. i'm finding now through the task manager that this happens to me every time i right click on a file regardless of the file type and regardless of what programs are open. strange... its a minor annoyance. |

| I tried it out on my system, it does indeed jump to 100%, not that it really effects anything. |
