Information on the "Nimda" Worm | |

A new worm, officially called W32/Nimda@MM, is circulating on the Internet and affecting large numbers of customers using Windows operating systems. Microsoft is working with the anti-virus community and other security experts to thoroughly investigate the worm. If you haven't already installed the appropriate updates and/or patches, your computer can become infected. | ||

That's because the hackers can usually get into the Unix servers by exploiting the ftp server, dns server, mail server, etc. Why worry about the web server?
Apache is not comparable to IIS because it does so much less. |

#11. Does Apache act as an ftp server?
What about a Message Queue server? What about a Transaction Server? What about Index Server? What about NNTP Server? What about SMTP? Does it do dynamic content? Does it easily connect to databases? Your answer to everyone of these questions is going to be "Yeah Unix can do that with the proper add-on." But not once will you say "Yeah Apache does that." Perhaps I'm a hopeless Winbot, but it's pretty clear I know far more than you do. |

#14. So your answer is "No, Apache can't do any of that and I was wrong."
The Web server is also an option component of IIS. I've never encountered NNTP installed by default in either NT Option Pack or Win2k, you have to specifically ask for it. If I recall the same is true of SMTP. The point is Apache only offers a small subset of what IIS offers, trying to compare them in any other capacity is pointless. And my ego is appropriate for the size of my knowledge. :) |

#15. When Linux servers aren't secured and patched they get rooted. Every company I've had dealings with that used Linux has had this happen at one time.
Being rooted is far more serious than a worm. With the worm you can predict what kind of damage it caused and possibly clean up after it. Linux has also had it's fair share of worms over the past couple of years, but since there are far fewer important boxes running Linux nobody really noticed. |

I think you are the one who can't read #20... All categories eh? WHy don't you look again, you may be surprised. Here at the University of Texas we get reports when machines get filtered (they get hacked and start doing bad things). By and large its the Linux boxes that get hacked more often of the time. Recently Windows boxes have been getting hacked with first Code Red and then this Nimda virus. By and large the Unix varities fall prey to hackers more than the Windows machines. The difference is that Windows makes the news and besides, who really cares about Linux anyways?
