To date, Microsoft has made several advances in their server software. When they first ventured into this area, Windows NT was considered, to be frank, a poor example of a server operating system. Novell, the market leader when Microsoft began, even went so far as to offer Directory Services for NT as a separate product because of Microsoft’s lack of Directory Services.
