Microsoft's dominance on the desktop seems impenetrable, but efforts to standardize office document formats could one day pose a threat to one of the software giant's core revenue generators. Microsoft's Office suite accounts for more than 90 percent of today's market for desktop office productivity applications. Yet, some industry watchers believe work under way within the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), an international consortium, may someday produce a viable alternative to the de facto standard Microsoft has created through Office's proprietary document formats. | ||

While endorsing basic XML standards, Microsoft is not so cooperative in the standardization of office document formats
Who is driving everything to XML/web services for than MS? Nevertheless, Microsoft has yet to reveal the proprietary dialect, or underlying schema, of the XML used in Office 2003, which will also support proprietary formats. Schema refers to all the XML tags that define the elements of a document. As far as I know the Office format has been "public" and hasn't changed for years yet others can't see to get it right. Why would having the XML schema be any different? However, Microsoft's interoperability strategy may face a serious challenge from StarOffice and OpenOffice in large enterprises and government, if they provide similar functionality and generate XML file formats based on open standards. Don't they generate documents in MS office format now? "There's a magic that happens when you lower your price to zero. You get into a price discrepancy range that can sway potential customers." If everything is Zero how will Sun et all make any money? Brilliant business plan Also this is assuming that MS is standind still, factor in price cuts and Billions in research..... MS is here to stay |

soda, I understand fully, but I've never heard anyone say SDTS posed any kind of threat to ESRI or was ever meant to.
The idea of SDTS is to provide the USGS and other governmental organizations an interface method. This can be implemented with ESRI products. They never threatened each other and they work together. In fact, SDTS is very popular and is the best way in some circles to interface AutoCAD (DGX), Microstation (DGN), Integraph (SIF), MapInfo (MIF), and ArcInfo (shapefiles) files. Did your own example make any sense to you? Maybe if you had understood it, you could have applied it in this scenario and learned something--that open data exchange is a good thing, that standards can be built by a governing body to allow commercial products to interact, etc. |

" Obviously you weren't around the GIS world when SDTS was introduced 9 years ago, or weren't familiar with the venom that was thrown towards ESRI's proprietary/undocumented E00 export format. And yet still, to this day, much data is available in the E00 format. You made my point... SDTS did not break ESRI's hold on the market. Now defend the article. |

Simply untrue. The full schema documentation is available in the Office 2003 Content Development Kit, keeping in mind that Office 2003 is still beta and the formats could still change between now and RTM. |
