There will soon be another entrant in the lopsided Office wars. IBM, not exactly a powerhouse in desktop applications, has its own attack on the desktop planned for later this year. IBM Software and its Lotus Software Group have built J2EE-based spreadsheet, document and presentation graphics "applications" that will be bundled for free with the company's WebSphere portal, sources said. | ||

It seems to me that Office is so complex and diverse, half hearted attempts like this one won't really do much. If IBM really wants to attack Office, they need a very similar suite of products that will be able to compete in everyway with Office.
Most companies are going to buy the whole bundle of products, not just spreadsheet, document and presentation graphics applications from one company and then the other products they need from another. At this point, companies are going to have to spend billions of dollars in R&D in order to have a competent shot at brining down Office. I'd love to watch it unfold and I think such a threat to Office would really make Microsoft scramble by lowering prices and truly innovating the good Office products they have now. |

If their office suit will be as awful as the Lotus Notus client application, I don't see it as a real thread to Microsoft. This post was edited by RickNL on Saturday, April 12, 2003 at 11:46. |

why would IBM build a java-based office suite? dont they know that microsoft removed java from teh OS and illegally killed java.
Or so you would have believed if you disengaged your brain and took the register and c|net articles seriously. |

Correct. But IBM don't have anything to do with Windows so creating their 'Office' applications in J2EE means clients can run in on multiple OS including Windows (assuming the client has Sun's JVM or the more likely scenario - IBM provides their own which is much faster/leaner). But yes, if they wanted to be sneaky.. they let the cat out of the bag! Mind you those products are probably very WebSphere-centric which would further explain why they are written in J2EE. They are using their WebSphere marketshare to push these products out. |

| #5 Removing from OS, and killing java. First of all I do not agree that java is dead (well, websites don't use java apps any more, they rather use Flash, but this doesn't mean much), secondly I don't beleive that this tactic could be an excuse of death for any application. With this logic pdf technology should have died years ago. It didn't make it to be a part of the OS in the very first place. |

| #5 Java is pretty close to dead in the commercial markets. You don't see many apps coming out in Java. Even some RIPS for our presses have moved back to C++ from Java. You must be kidding if you think that the fact that people are use Flash rather than Java Applets isn't a good measurement for how Java is doing. That was the main use commercially for java for a while. It may not be dead but it is withering, and there doesn't seem to be much being done to fix it. Even Sun thinks the technology sucks as revealed in internal Memos. And don't compare Java to PDF technology... PDF technology has move alot faster than Java has done... it just didn't get as much lip service by the press since it doesn't have the Drama and conflict like Java does. |
