PC Makers Push XP Out The Starting Gate | |

On Monday, PC makers including Compaq Computer, Dell Computer and Gateway unveiled a host of new systems preloaded with the latest Microsoft operating system. Prices start at about $750 for desktop models without monitors and $999 for laptops. However, economic uncertainties may mean that the computer-buying public--millions of PC owners whose machines have processors at 500MHz or slower--may initially do more window shopping than buying. Regardless, with Monday as the first day PC makers can offer Windows XP on new systems, manufacturers are attempting to motivate shoppers to upgrade their older PCs. Officially, Windows XP won't debut until Oct. 25, but Microsoft is permitting PC makers to sell computers with the new OS on Monday. Initially, Microsoft instructed PC makers to soft-pedal the prelaunch. But subtlety appears to be falling by the wayside. And roughly 30 days after the Oct. 25 release, Windows XP will become the near-exclusive OS for consumer computers, according to sources in the PC industry. | ||

XP isn't going to rescue the PC industry. The economy is in a slump, consumer confidence is down, recession is in the air, terrorism has rocked the nation, and generally people just don't care about computers anymore. I think we are going to see a great deal of attrition in the PC industry before this is over. Emachines will go under, HP and Compaq have merged which will leave only one PC, Gateway will go bankrupt of sell out, and IBM will likely withdraw from the PC market next year. When its all said and done, I think this is what the PC landscape will look like:
1. Dell = #1 in business PCs 2. HPap = # 1 in consumer retail 3. Sony = # 2 close second behind HPaq 4. Apple = still trailing the big boys Everyone else will be gone. |

Sad but true. Christmas 01 will say for sure. Look for bad news in first quarter reports in 2002.
Will anyone really miss the emachine? :) |
