Oracle's lead in database market shrinks as IBM, Microsoft gain
Time: 08:28 EST/13:28 GMT | News Source: Blues News | Posted By: Todd Richardson

Oracle Corp.'s lead in the database software market shrank last year, as International Business Machines Corp. and Microsoft Corp. boosted sales, market researcher IDC said. Oracle's share of the $13 billion market declined to 39.4 percent last year from 41.7 percent in 2001, IDC said. IBM's portion increased to 33.6 percent from 31 percent, and Microsoft's rose to 11.1 percent from 9.7 percent. IBM and Microsoft gained on Oracle by charging less and by selling database software for smaller tasks or to small and medium- size businesses, IDC analyst Carl Olofson wrote in a report. Some Oracle clients have licenses bought two years ago that they haven't used yet, hurting the company's sales, Olofson wrote. Microsoft is the world's largest software maker, IBM is second biggest, and Oracle is third.

I'd actually say this looks good for Oracle, and they don't need to change a thing--except the image issues, corporate governance, gov't contracts, etc...--i.e. there are a lot of problems but not much to fear. Considering IBM just consolidated two major DB lines, and both they and MS have been aggressively attacking Oracle's foothold for the last two years, and Oracle has had a lot of missteps in the public eye--it seems to me that customers haven't really migrated away from them too much--particularly in terms of choosing Oracle technology and product pricing over the competitors.

Jerky, let me get this straight. They are loosing market share and depending on who you listen they might or might not be #1. And your advice is to stay with the current course of action?

Brilliant, that is logical.

#3 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 3/11/2003 4:02:39 PM
Red, did macross inform you that he can no longer fulfill his duties chasing my comments around or something? It seems like you've taken over that role.

What of this do you not understand: "I'd actually say this looks good for Oracle, and they don't need to change a thing--except the image issues, corporate governance, gov't contracts, etc...--i.e. there are a lot of problems but not much to fear."

Can you read?

My point being--this is a tech site, isn't it? It sounds to me like Oracle still has the best product--it may be at a higher price and doesn't fit well in smaller markets but they shouldn't adjust their technology or packaging. Considering the problems they had I think the slight erosion is only slight. What the fck is so controversial or illogical about that statement.

#4 By 7390 (63.211.44.114) at 3/11/2003 4:33:35 PM
Jerky, for a long time I would visit activewin and just the reads the comments. Then one day I couldn't take it anymore. I had to save the world from you and the way you twist things.

sounds like Microsoft to me. I will bet that if someone had said that about Microsoft you would gotten your head out of Steve Jobs' butt and started a fight.

Butt (pun intended) regarding your comments wouldn't it be logical to make the price more competitive in order to save market share? Isn't that logical Mr. SodaJerk?

#5 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 3/11/2003 4:39:14 PM
No, Red, the answer to every and all situations is not to lower the price. Too bad you think you can run every business the same way. That's pathetic and unlogical. Pretty illogical to think that all that matters is simply marketshare.

And this: "sounds like Microsoft to me." Do you know anything about DBs? MS is the cheap one that fits in small markets, buddy. I mean, I know you were trying to flame me and all, but did you think that was going to work?

#6 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 3/11/2003 4:40:57 PM
"Butt (pun intended)",

but pun pathetic.

Well use what you like Jerk. I use SQL Server and make a heck of a lot more money than you...

#8 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 3/11/2003 5:21:56 PM
I use SQL Server too, Red. Which is why I'd gladly take Red up on his bet. No one has ever heard me diss SQL--it's one of MS's best products and also one of their most affordable products too.

And I'm not interested in pathetic little games like "and I make more money than you too" bullsh!t.

This is amazing Jerk, there is a Microsoft product that you like. WOW
And I was thinking that your passoinate dislike for all thing Microsoft was complete. Is there a Mac version of SQL server? No, then does mean that you use Windows at work? I am guessing that you have your SQL server running on one of the Windows Server editions.

With that said, you probably also use Outlook, Office, Power Point, Visio and maybe even Visual Studio (but I doubt it). Wow, with all of the time in the Window world when do you find the time to massage Steve Jobs' ba.....back?

#11 By 7390 (63.211.44.114) at 3/11/2003 8:13:25 PM
#12, who is to say that some us of aren't "the boss" and our opinions do count? admit it, you are just trying to increase your post count. I know I am

Hey Brian or someone at ActiveWin

I want to suggest a statistic page!

where you would list
1. Top 10 overall posters
2. Top 10 posters of the day and week.
3. Top to posters that disprove SodaJerk (this might generate too much traffic)

and perhaps offer a Tshirt or something every month.
Since everything appears to be DB driven this should be a snap.

#12 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 3/11/2003 8:24:11 PM
Red, I have clearly stated on numerous occasions how I make my living, dumb@ss. Yes, I run SQL Server on Windows. Yes, my (work-related) web sites are on Windows/IIS. Yes, I use all of the software you mention (and you forgot Access).

And, guess what, I still think most all of it sucks! So what's your point? That I am actually a sophisticated user of both systems but prefer the Mac. uh, huh. Been saying that since day one.

#13 By 3653 (209.149.57.116) at 3/11/2003 11:10:24 PM
my stats for today... SQL Server 2K on an 8-way box... handling 600,000 active users. Yummy. Total price for SQL Server? 8 * $9100 = $73k.

My company went the Oracle route a few years ago. The product was developed for a year, then abandoned. We lost over $400k in Oracle costs alone.

#14 By 7390 (63.211.44.114) at 3/12/2003 12:17:17 PM
OK folks, let us see If SodaJerk can twist his way out of this! In the ActiveXbox forum he claimed that the Xbox was a piece of crap. I and others pointed out that in every technical aspects the Xbox was superior and these were his words:

"He stated that the Xbox is crap yet in technical aspects it is superior to the PS1/2."

Mr SodaJerk's words:
As I said (CLEARLY) superior tech specs means nothing if the games don't compare. If the majority of good games are on the INFERIOR platform, who cares? They are still better games.

If you will allow me I will equate games to applications. Would you admit that the Windows platform has more available apps and "better" apps. Since you yourself just admitted to using Microsoft tools in your work and I am guessing at home also (see post #15). By your own definition would that make Apple and Linux Crap?

*edited workds to words, thanks SodaJerk for going easy on my typo.

By all means no. When did I say the apps were better? I don't get to make these decisions at work. You can make up stupid sh!t all you want to amuse yourself, but if you are going to reference #15 why not get the related bit: "And, guess what, I still think most all of it sucks!"

Can someone teach Red how to read?

I particularly love how you say "these were his workds" (do you mean words), but then you post: "He stated that the Xbox is crap yet in technical aspects it is superior to the PS1/2." Those are my words? Hmmm, I speak of myself in the third person, or are you using your's and Brian's twisted, pathetic, little misinterpretation of what I said?

Jesus, can someone teach Red how to quote too?

Me no read, no me can read. I especially don’t like to read the words of someone that always twists the truth. Yes, you don’t make the decisions at work but you do make the decision to be there. Once again equating games to apps. Clearly the WinIntel platform has more apps and almost everyone (except you) agrees that they are better. Based on your statements about the PS1/2 and Xbox would it stand to reason that you would call Apple and Linux crap? You can attack me all that you want but I am just pointing out how conniving your statements are.

#17 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 3/12/2003 2:54:51 PM
Conniving? You attributed a quote to me that I never made, and completely ignored the statement I made in a post you referenced. How's that for conniving?

As to this new ridiculous analogy, it's simply a joke--games are not apps... For apps the end product can be the same but the experience can be quite different... For a game, the experience is the product.

I do not think I'm inconsistent to say that the world of console games is entirely different from the world of general computing.

"Yes, you don’t make the decisions at work but you do make the decision to be there." This is the silliest piece of crap, and it's an old argument we've had here before. Rather than make that argument again, I would simlpy ask: How is my ability to compromise and work with applications that I do not particularly like in anyway indicative of whether or not I think the apps are better? Very specious claim. The fact remains that even though I can work with the apps I work better with and prefer alternatives. Plain and simple.

OK Jerky, if you would be so kind. Please list the apps that you work with and what alternative(s) you work better with and prefer.

And my analogy of games to consoles and apps to computers is totally valid. But I won’t get distracted by your comments. Responding to you I get the same feeling in my stomach as when I read the Simarilian and first learned of Melkor.

#19 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 3/12/2003 4:34:29 PM
How is it valid? YOu play games for an experience; you use computer software to accomplish something, to produce a product. That end result can be produced a number of different ways, but each user is generally concerned with a finite number of tasks, capabilities, and operations.

"Responding to you I get the same feeling in my stomach as when I read the Simarilian and first learned of Melkor."

Then stop.

Evil must not be allowed to roam free :)

back to showing you the light:

Games: software designed and coded for a specific purpose but does not have to be used for that.

Application: software that was designed and coded for a specific purposes but does not have to used for that.

As everything becomes more web centric the lines are and will be blurred. I am sure that the military use many games as training/productivity tool. Would you consider a flight simulator to be a game or productivity tool? I can list many others that can be used as a productivity/training tools/game.

Come on Jerk, I know that you are very tech savvy and so I expect better from you.

Red, if you want to descend into idiocy, that's fine. I have no reason to respond to crap that no one is going to take seriously. Most of my responses over the past couple of days have been to address lies, inaccuracies, misrepresentations of what I said, or slanders against me.

If you want to say a console game is the same thing as an application, okay, prove yourself a dumbass in front of all your softy cohorts!

#22 By 3653 (209.149.57.116) at 3/12/2003 7:49:34 PM
wow, i read the last half of this thread hoping to see jerk's list of apps used versus preferred... but it appears he chose to SHUT UP rather than PUT UP. What a surprise.
