Microsoft Holds the Line on Server Prices | |

Some Microsoft Corp. customers who run Windows server software are expressing disappointment over the company's pricing plan for the upcoming Windows Server 2003. Considering the tough economic environment and cuts in corporate IT spending—as well as cheaper hardware platforms—some customers expected the Redmond, Wash., company to announce lower software prices. Those customers, who may not yet have signed up for Microsoft's volume licensing and Software Assurance agreements, say they may wait before upgrading to the server software. | ||

What's amazing to me at least, is that while Linux isn't competition at the desktop level. it is at the server level.
So the 999 dollars on standard server is a huge difference over the free Linux System. Or even better the free BSD Unix systems. While I do agree with ComputerExperts assessment. I do agree that MS should evaluate the priceing of the server platform. el |

um..eldoen, I thought that we covered the fact that nothing is free. Ever heard of something called total cost of ownership? But also I get the sense that even if MS lowered their price the next argument would be why didn't they lower it more. And why didn't they lower it sooner and why not for all products?
Damn if they do and damn if they don't. |

| And then there would be a lawsuit saying that Microsoft is illegally using it's monopoly in the desktop arena to subsidize the cost of the Server products in an effort to leverage it's way into the market. |

Isn't that in essence what IBM is doing with its switch to Linux. While not a desktop client they are certainly lowering he price of the hardware package with the Linux platform. Or for that matter Sun and its linux offerings over Solaris. I believe there is enough compition using Publically available code to lower the cost of development of a platform that MS has leeway to offer server at a lower cost. Further, since even a desktop install of linux can be a server workstation, I can forsee the combination of desktop and standard server to compete with that in the future. At the cost of say a Redhat distribution?? Ok, give me XP, with a DNS server, Media server, and a web server, and I would have pretty much what I need to do a true Homestation network. (and not the very limited web server in pro, (run into its connection issues just doing asp.net samples now) yet alone setting up a web server that handles web services for doing Home automation or video and audio distribution in the house. el El |

re-read #3,4 and 5. Some how I think that you missed something. IBM lowering it's prices is viewed as a good thing. Microsoft is viewed as dumping, maintanining a monopoly and anti-competive. |

| In other news... I went to Jack in the Box tonight and got a Chili Cheeseburger. The price was 99 cents... the same as it cost me a month ago. Damn you Jack... I would sure like to pay 80 cents. |

| It would be nice to hop onto Microsoft's site and build your own Windows Server package, picking and choosing which services you want to install and such, kind of like going on to Dell's site to buy a custom computer. |

| CPUGuy, when you install IE what part of IE are you really installing and how much is already there? same goes for other MS product since a lot of it is tied to the OS (code reuse). I can probably give more examples but you get the point. Also it might make maintenance more difficult! One guy has component A, B and D while another other guy has C,E and F. It's easier to just say "I have Windows 2003 WebEdition". |

| Red, we aren't talking simple applications here, we are talking about system services, such as DNS, DHCP, RRAS, IIS, etc.... this is a server, NOT a desktop. |
