MS aims at Linux with $399 Server 2003, Web Edition | |

There will be no price increases (as such) when Microsoft ships its next server OS, Windows Server 2003, on April 24th, but there will be a new budget-priced version of the product aimed squarely at the web server market. Server 2003 Web Edition comes without client access licences, with a 2gig limit on memory, 2-way SMP, and is $399. It's essentially a stripped-down version of Standard Edition ($999), which comes with 4gig, 4-way SMP and five CALs, and it also comes with some distribution limitations, the import of which are not yet clear. "Windows Server 2003, Web Edition is not available in all channels," says the footnote. "Contact your local System Builder, OEM, or reseller for more information on how to purchase." | ||

| Off subject but does anybody have any comments on the NLBS which is going to come with all server editions? Is it reliable etc. I guess is my question. I know its "new" but someone has to have it that comes here :) |

#3 Parker Sure, you will have to run your SQL Server on another box, but that would be good practice anyway.
Why? (as others has stated in previous post) it is no less or more secure than being on it's own box. If someone gets on to your web server what do you is next? And why should you force a small shop that tried to save money by buying the Web Edition to buy a box just for SQL server? Ever heard of router? and blocking the SQL ports? |

#2, I will tell you why I will buy it: Because it is not Linux. Not that I have anything against Linux, it is because I am more comfortable developing for Windows, I currently have my personal and my family's small business websites running on Windows, and because it is what I want to use.
You state that Microsoft does not yet get the web, I say that the ABM crowd does not yet get that people want choice. I know, funny thing, huh? The Linux crowd whines that MS is a monopoly, and there is no choice. And yet, when somebody chooses something other than Linux they scream "why would you run anything other than Linux?" You selected your website OS brand, and let me select **my** brand of OS. If you do not like what I run, too bad. Deal with it. Besides, your arguments do not match up with my personal experiences. While I have yet to benchmark Win 2003 Server web version, my experiences run contrary to yours with older versions of Windows Server. Yhave found what you like works for you. Good! But what I use works for me. Good! I am going to start using the web version because I do not need to run a lot of different services that W2K server uses, no streaming media, etc. Just a web server that serves up ASP.NET pages. And this fits me just right. If you do not like it, you do not need to use it, use Linux (which defeats the whole monopoly argument, doesn't it?). |

| Here's a q - web server outside of firewall in the land of the mean and nasty Internet. SQL Server 2000 in the comfy wumfy intranet land with a tough as nails firewall that won't let so much as an ICMP through. Hmm, how does the web server in the mean and nasty Internet talk to the SQL Server in the comfy wumfy intranet? |

#5 Parker, your information is misleading. As #7 pointed why is your IIS outside of the firewall and DMZ? Why not just block all ports except 80 (and those that you need exposed)? What is a firewall for?
You seem to give a lower priority to someone hacking your web server than your SQL box. |

#12 parker, maybe we are too stupid. At least we are smart enough to just open port 80 in the router to our IIS box and not have to bother with a DMZ.
But seriously why is your IIS outside of your firewall? doesn't sounds too smart ;) |

RedHook - We have what we call the Bastion network. It's not really DMZ, it sits between two firewalls. We open port 80 on the internet side, and then ports on the internal side for connections to app servers, database, whatever.
stubear - I believe you only need CALs if you are authenticating users using NTLM. |

parker, well thanks for the insult, bro. I wasn't mocking you. I was asking a question. I'm a programmer, not an admin. The question which blue basically answered was how does an external web server connect to an internal database server. |
