The deal came like a thunderbolt out of the blue. On Feb. 19, Microsoft (MSFT ) announced that it had purchased Virtual PC, the nifty program from San Mateo (Calif.) software producer Connectix that allows us Mac zealots to run PC programs. I'd imagine that MS' purchase of Virtual PC has less to do with Apple (though I know the Maccots would love to think they're so important), and more to do with the PC.
PC emulators are becoming more and more popular for testing, data-centers, and a host of other applications. VMWare is a leader, and so is Connectix with Virtual PC. My guess is that MS has big plans to use in a datacenter application, or for some other application. Why sell one copy of windows per PC, when you can sell 3 or 4? :) |

I just don't get was recursive about it: yes, three licenses (maybe more)--all of them Microsoft.
AhhH! What a nightmare! Ok, if you think paying licenses to MS is nightmarish, sure. But people running VMWare or VPC are already doing the same thing... Don't see anything different 'cept that now its one company you are paying it too. Wasn't it more recursive before to run Windows, then VPC by Connectix, then Win 3 before? Of course, it is hilarious that MS is building in support for older OSes to drive support of the newer OSes because people do not find a compelling reason to move forward.... According to Business Week the Macintosh is completely worthless without the ability to run Windows.

Uhh, Jagged, that' what MS is saying. They have announced their plans. It's being built into the OS. It is designed to move NT and older OS users to XP/Longhorn... What is hypothetical about that.
As for soda, soda's argument isn't flawed because of a lack of evidence--it's fundamentally flawed logically. I don't see how reiterating MS's publicly stated plans are hypothetical or unfounded. Please explain that one if you care to. |
