Thanks Sיbastien. Microsoft packages hotfixes in an automatically installed format. You can install a hotfix by running the hotfix program file. The hotfix program file extracts the hotfix files and runs the Hotfix.exe or the Update.exe program.
Hotfixes included in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or earlier use the Hotfix.exe program.
Hotfixes included in Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 or later and hotfixes released after Service Pack 4 use a new engine to install hotfixes. Windows XP hotfixes also use this hotfix installation engine. The file name for the new installation engine is Update.exe.
The installation program (Hotfix.exe or Update.exe) checks the service pack version you are currently using; if the service pack version is earlier than the hotfix version and the language is the same, the installation program installs the hotfix automatically. If your service pack version is later than the hotfix version, the installation does not continue.
