Microsoft makes a lot of editing programs -- for words, numbers, presentations and pictures -- but it gives away hardly any of them. Its new Windows Movie Maker 2, however, is a free download for any Windows XP user. That's a big deal, and a decent one, too -- provided you understand this program's limits. | ||

It's not bad. I've made a few little movies with it to show the family, but it's not for making productions. It's for capturing video, arranging and clipping it and maybe adding some audio. For that it's very good.
If you want to do real productions (well, as good non-professional as you can get), then Vegas Video 3 (4.0 is almost out) is probably one of the best I've used. Adobe Premier sucks. I can't imagine how anyone ever uses this flaming pile of buggy, choppy-video-producing garbage. If it doesn't completely hoark your videos, it will crash and cost you many hours of lost work. Avoid it like the plague. |

| #1 I haven't used Vegas Video so I can't really compare Premiere to it but I have to say that I've found Premier to be fantastic..... once I learnt how to use the monster of a package that it is! And I've never had any problems with it capturing video, editing it nor outputting it in a different format, I think it's a fantastic package.... but not something for Joe Average who wants to send his parents a video of their grandchildren! |

This article is spot on. I tried out MovieMaker on a friends PC when it was first available. Just as the reviewer wrote, it is very disappointing. Microsoft made what should be a simple process into a multi-step, constant-Wizard-using mess. Comparing it to iMovie 3 makes Apple's consumer editing software look like a full featured studio. I'm always amazed that MS has so many programmers yet they never seem to get simple things right or make them easy.
If you want to do anything creative, including edit video, and do it easily with some fun and flare, get a Mac. If you want to be an accountant, stay with Windows. |

| I'm assuming you got that ridiculous "gay-bashing" statement from the word "flare"? Nice try but don't put words in my mouth. If you actually had read what I wrote I was PRAISING the Macintosh and bashing WINDOWS. Who's the troll now kiddo? I stand by my statement. Windows is boring and XP's Luna theme didn't help. You can put syrup on crap but that doesn't make pancakes. |

#10 For something as simple as that I would recommend VirtualDub: http://www.virtualdub.org/
It's quite simple to use, has some quite powerful features and it's free. Can't really ask for any more than that. |

| I do have to agree with the comments about the limitations of Movei Maker 2. It has great transitions and text effects, some of which I have not seen in other middle range products, but the interface is faulty, clumsy and it only does wmv, which is a shortcoming, as many fullf leged video and DVD programs don't recognize it to make dvds (can't be imported). I have to say that Imovie and specially Final Cut Pro are excellent if not some of the best out there, but the PC has as many wonderful video editing programmes as the mac if not more. I don't quite like using macs, I like the look of Aqua, it is luxurious, but not as practical for me. Premiere, well i just dont get it, is bloated and it crashes. Microsoft should improve on the interface and add other export facilities, it is tru, it takes a while for MS to get an interface rigth, pitty. |

| After using Premiere for a short while, WMM is a much better alternative. I use it to edit the video in AVI format only. TMPGEnc is still my choice when compress the AVIs into MPEG1 or 2. Most commercial video editing packages have not so great MPEG compressions. I like to tweak those a few dozens of compression parameters to get the best out of my lousy Panasonic DV camera. |

That explains the three third parties creating commercial effects plug-ins that now number over 500, huh? Third parties love iMovie. Not to mention the hundreds of free/share/donate-ware plug-ins of various kinds you can find. |
