People leave Microsoft all the time, and many of them pass along their departing thoughts in e-mail messages to their colleagues. But the missive sent by Mr David Stutz, a respected technical thinker within the firm for more than a decade, is more intriguing than most. In his last job, Mr Stutz, 46, was a group program manager for Microsoft's 'shared source' initiative - a crucial effort at the company to deal with the threat from the open-source software movement by sharing more Microsoft code with universities and industry partners. | ||

| Shrinkwrapped software revenue will never die, it will only lessen over time. MS needs to be forward looking, yes, but to turn a blind-eye on the past, and on the revenue of their standard-model software sales, would be foolhardy. |

| Actually, we haven't seen the numbers (since IBM hasn't published them), so we don't know how Linux figures into IBM's revenue stream. Further, from IBM's perspective, the important thing isn't Linux, it is their proprietary database, app server, collaboration server, etc that they sell on top of it. |
