I have just been informed that the long awaited space sim come trade sim Freelancer from Digital Anvil and Microsoft went gold yesterday. More news as we get it but currently there isn't an official release date apart from March 2003.

Because this site is about Microsoft/Windows I would guess and that Freelancer is a Microsoft game?

We can expect real quality from this then can't we? After all, it's a whole week since we saw the previews where the audio wasn't quite there, the multi-player didn't work etc. But it's OK, the screen grabber works so you can publish pretty reviews.
I see another Combat Flight Sim 3 here. BTW, the patch for that is out today - 3 months after release... and it still doesn't fix all the issues.
I trust the Freelancer dev team are alredy working on the patch....

bag, perhaps we should compare to the number of patches Blizzard has issued for Diablo, StarCraft, D2, WarCraft, etc. ? The very first thing that happened when I logged into Battle.net with D2 LoD (two days before it was even released), was to download a patch. The same thing happened with WarCraft III. Software has bugs and patches are issued, get used to it.

Is it just me or did bag's comment seem like pure gibberish?

The CFS3 patch is up at http://microsoftgamesinsider.com/CFSInsider/default.htm.
Bob. I do not consider the number of patches coming from other developers an excuse. It is appalling. The fact that this is considered acceptable just goes to show the whole shoddy nature of the business.
Bargib. Anyone who works with software will tell you that 2 months to clean up bugs, in a project that has been running for four years, is not enough. As to pretty solid, by that stage it should have just needed mass player testing to ensure the game balance was correct.
There are two other aspects that concern me about Freelancer and are the reasons I will hold back with my cash until the first user reviews are in.
1. The team that did this, produced some of the best games ever back in the Wing Commander 1, 2 & 3. All of which introduced some revolutionary aspect to games. Unfortunately, they also went on to do Privateer 2 and Starlancer - both of which were extremely buggy.
2. 3 Years ago, MS stopped putting out beta test versions of their games on a big scale due to piracy problems. The result has been a distinct drop in quality of their releases since then. Even the big names: FS2002 had some appalling scenery errors. CFS3 needs a more powerful system than has been invented yet. Age of Mythology needed a patch as soon as it hit the shelves. Maybe the effort has gone into the Xbox - though even there we have some significant bugs in the games.

Starlancer wasn't that bad - worked perfectly here.
The PR build we got was released early December...that is nearly 2 months extra work to put into it.

Well I hope you are right and it is a good space sim. I've had a soft spot for the genre since playing Elite back in the 80's.
The Erin Roberts link bothers me. He was the one claiming credit for the weirdness in Privateer 2. I'd have been more confident if Chris Roberts had stayed on board, but I can understand why he didn't (I've witnessed MS buyouts first hand!)
Your comments on Starlancer are interesting - I've found it runs better on XP than it ever did on previous systems! But the 3D sound problem was a pretty major bug - it was reported in the beta test and ignored - and has never been patched. The other problems with it may have been driver issues, but I remember when it was launched, it wouldn't play more than 2 or 3 missions without a crash using the then best-of-breed 3dfx's. If it wasn't tested with those cards, then it was not tested properly.
I appreciate that Freelancer is getting a lot of good comments from testers and pre-viewers, but excuse my cynicism when I point out that CFS3 had similar reports.
Again, I hope it is as good as the hype suggests.
But for all you who have actually played the beta/press-build, does the mouse interface work? That 3rd person view looks a bit odd for a space game?

The mouselook works perfectly..the 3rd person view is pefect too. I think you will really enjoy it when it comes out, believe me...after the disappointment of games like Unreal 2 lately Freelancer will be something far better.
