Thanks Chris. "The software comes from the Kroupware project, bankrolled by the German government to build open-source software that can substitute for Microsoft's Exchange and Outlook. Though the first elements have appeared in the new KDE 3.1 software, more will arrive in 3.2 later this year, said Andreas Pour, president of the KDE League. Linux is an open-source operating system, meaning anyone may see, modify and redistribute the software, a contrast to the proprietary control Microsoft keeps over Windows. Many open-source projects run atop the Linux core, including the XFree86 graphics technology and the KDE and Gnome interfaces that provide utilities such as control panels as well as software building blocks such as pull-down menus. Someone mentioned in a post earlier that since this is open source that Germany is basically funding code for the world.
Lets the take the total cost/number of German tax payers and then tell each German of their individual contribution. Thank you German tax payers. This post was edited by RedHook on Monday, February 03, 2003 at 11:10. |

It seems like this sort of thing would be contrary to the WTO agreement. Its akin to the US government giving MSFT alot of money to add features into their CRM product... so that it can better compete against Germany's big CRM companies.

As for the German tax payers, what is wrong? if they run Linux they TOO will enjoy the results of the investment. What if the tax payers don't use Linux and god forbid they actually use Windows? Then basically their tax money will down the toilet. No one will argue that the German tax payers will benefit also (if they use Linux), but I think that they may take exception to the fact that they are directly funding software development for the rest of the world. Also I wonder if the Government is making cut backs in other areas? (schools, police, sanitation, social services) while funding "globally free software". On a different note, why is the Government in the software development business anyway? |

#10, you probably don't use XYZ road but the roads that you do use you probably couldn't individually afford to maintain. Also you probably couldn't afford to have your streets cleaned. So in generally you mostly likely get more than you pay for (not you specifically but in general).
#11, No, I am guessing that the German tax paxers (like most relational folks) just want the government to use best tool available at the best price. To go a long with this thought, I am sure that you will agree that they should be using open source everything (OS,DB, Email program, Webserver, accounting..). Why only not use MS products? Why stop at software? Why are they funding Intel, Apple, Sun, Palm, AMD..... Fair is Fair |
