If you use Windows XP and make Net2Phone phone calls with Windows Messenger, please read this important message from Microsoft: | |

As a customer who makes phone calls with .Net Voice Services, we thought you would like to know about a significant change that is occurring to the service. .NET Voice Services is going to be removed from Windows Messenger when it is next released. If you choose to upgrade to the new Windows Messenger, the ability to "Make a Phone Call" will be removed. However, .Net Voice Services currently is available and will continue to be available through MSN Messenger. To continue making phone calls, you should download and use MSN Messenger. All Windows Messenger features are available in MSN Messenger, and you will have the same list of "buddies" in MSN Messenger. Note: If you currently place Net2Phone phone calls through your MSN Messenger this message does not pertain to you. | ||

MSN Messenger 5.0 now supports voice and video. I don't see anything that only supported in Windows Messenger now. Besides, MSN Messenger 5.0 now uses UPnP for file transfer. It should work better behind a UPnP enabled router while Windows Messenger 4.x relies on special protocol support from the router. |

About time they kill Windows Messenger and consolidate into 1 product. While their at it they should probably kill WinXP Home Edition, WinXP MultiMedia (sell as a separate product installed on WinXP Pro, that's all it is) and about 5 Windows Server versions (eg. Small Business). Single server product with activation pricing as number of processors goes up is all you need. Think how much money they could make by taking out the confusion???

naw, small business server is a great product.
get Server, exchange and sql server for the cost of sql server in on package for a small shop that is great. (and cover 5 client licenses) Unfortant part is that you have to buy client liceses in packs of 5 and it is is limited to 50 clietn licensts total. Don't think you can cluster either so 50 would be about the limit of a good stand alone server (well a couple of years ago with sbe 2000) No they need to make Server and sbe server at least cluster on two systems, and give a good upgrade path to the real versions of sql server and exchange when the business grows that big. El |

Those of you who think its stupid to have seperate MSN and Windows messenger, make sure you know who to blame. Not Microsoft. They have simply taken a proactive stance with the product, because they knew/know that AOL would/will launch a legal case against them due to Microsoft's bundling MSN functionality and IM with their monopoly OS.
So, when you feel frustrated by the 2 products... thank the trust-busters and competitors. ps... I also hate having the two IMs. This post was edited by mooresa56 on Thursday, January 30, 2003 at 18:16. |

You're right, it's not confusing ... but a question still remains--why? Why even have two different products? Yeah, Windows M is integrated while MSN M is not, but they can still be almost exactly the same as far as the consumer is concerned ... am I missing something? :)

All these comments about it not being confusing, maybe one of them can help explain the features that Windows Messenger has that are not in MSN Messenger and vice-a-versa. Fact is Windows Messenger has some features that MSN Messenger does not and MSN Messenger has some features that Windows Messenger does not. Confusing? You don't think that creates confusion out there. Most likely those reading this forum are on the upper end of the technology ladder and your not confused. But I can guarantee it does cause confusion for the vast percentage of users. I disagree it is not comparable to Excel 97 and Excel 2000. That was an upgrade of a product which replaced the old version on all operating systems.
I agree with the comments that Small Business Server is needed. My only complaint is that the actual Server software should be a standard release and then package all the backoffice stuff onto it in a Small Business Addon. Don't give the Small Business Server release a specific version of the core Server product. Can't tell you how many times I have seen businesses install a Windows Server Service Pack onto Small Business Server since they were thinking that they had Windows Server installed. It is not pretty !!! |
