Microsoft fails Slammer's security test | |

Microsoft's policy of relying on software patches to fix major security flaws was questioned Monday after a series of internal e-mails revealed that the software giant's own network wasn't immune from a worm that struck the Internet last weekend. The messages seen by CNET News.com portray a company struggling with a massive infection by the SQL Slammer worm, which inundated many corporate networks Saturday with steady streams of data that downed Internet connections and clogged bandwidth. "All apps and services are potentially affected and performance is sporadic at best," Mike Carlson, director of data center operations for Microsoft's Information Technology Group, stated in an e-mail sent at 8:04 a.m. PST Saturday to other members of Microsoft's operations groups. "The network is essentially flooded with traffic, making it difficult to gather details concerning the impact." | ||

What other policy are the supposed to have?
The only thing I can think of is to have an auto-update featured turned on by default, and sys admins can turn it off if they choose. That way, everybody is covered. |

I think they're confuzing 2 totally different things - being infected by the virus and being flooded by the virus. Microsoft was simply flooded (dos'ed) by the virus. To say microsoft failed to protect against the virus, is to say all the asia isp's that were taken down by the virus failed too. It's very hard to make a network withstand that kind of bandwidth.

| nomdlev, ease of use still doesn't explain the laziness of the sysadmin to fail to patch the servers. If it's easier to use, then patching should have been easier, yes? Sorry, but this is pure laziness. |

| I agree that an Auto Update feature would be nice, esp if we can turn if off and on. After this worm, I'll be they are working on one. Maybe SP4 or the next SQL Server will have it. |

Looks like there is now a SP3 for MSDE...

" I assume you are referring to this: "Every patch so far has broken some part of the payroll system, and those same execs screaming for security scream even louder when paychecks don't get cut." This problem is not endemic to Microsoft, it's universal with all apps. We have the same problems with Oracle patches. We've had patches to our HPUX machines take out network cards. Patching can sometimes be dangerous, which is why one needs to test. But testing costs money. You rush off to Postgres and think you are off the hook, but you're not... You've just used security thru obscurity. Now when more people use Postgres it will come under attack, and then you'll be dealing with the same problem, and we'll have moved on and be chuckling at you. It's amazing how people are so totally willing to make the same mistakes because they are incapable or at least refuse to understand the fundamental problem. |

linuxhippie - Yep, you could do that. You can also do this in Oracle, it's pretty common with databases.
Again, Postgres doesn't offer anything new... other than a lack of functionality that other offerings have. |
