Microsoft Java Ruling: Too Little, Too Late? | |

In the wake of a federal judge's order late last month that forces Microsoft to include Sun Microsystems' version of Java in the Windows operating system, some analysts are taking the position that the ruling won't have a big impact. It makes for great headlines, especially anything negative toward MSFT, but SUNW has won nothing except a long appeal process from MSFT. Expect the judge in late spring or early summer to disallow the injunction while they fight it out first in court then and then, later on appeal. This process could take years.
Meanwhile, SUNW's best bet is to make superb products that the public actually wants to buy. That is the only way to beat MSFT. SUNW's present method only provides for the lawyers and of course, the tech press to write these stupid articles. |

Too Little, Too Late?
I don't know, I guess that depends on what Sun is seeking long term. The article is wrong on one point... "Sun's long-standing antitrust lawsuit claims that Microsoft included its own incompatible version of Java in Windows after unfairly dropping Sun's." No, Microsoft never included Sun's Java. And Microsoft's Java is not incompatible, it's just old dating back from like 1998. |

Sun has failed to create market demand for their product.
Flash did not ship with Windows or IE before in version 4 and before, if I recall correctly, yet they succeeded. Forcing MS to put the Sun JVM in Windows won't change the problem that there is no demand for Java on the desktop. |

1 GB of RAM? There ought to be a test to be allowed to create an account here.
What are these "real" applications? I'd like to try them out having less than a gig of RAM. |
