Apple's iSync software is here, but did it step up its development schedule in response to new synchronisation software coming from Microsoft? Apple Computer on Thursday released the final version of its iSync synchronisation software, in what could be seen as an attempt to trump new software coming next week from Microsoft. | ||

| Another key issue is the UI and ease of use. I have only been using iSync for a few hours and I can already tell you that it's a very elegant piece of software. Setting up my .Mac account and sync settings took about 30 seconds. I have an icon for iSync in the menu bar and in one click I can update all of my devices (my .Mac account and an iPod for now) in the background while still working in other apps. It's pretty slick. Now all I have to do is get a Palm Pilot and I'm all set :-) I haven't seen the MS stuff but so far I'm very impressed with Apple's effort. |

If PocketPC and Palm are industy standards and iSync does not support PocketPC, then Apple dose not support all "industry standards". Just like MS. |

I don't have a bluetooth enabled phone. I have a Nokia 8290... it can hold calendars and contact and stuff, but I need this special software from Nokia to do it.
I have a hard time believing there are any industry standards on cell phones as far as synchronization of contact info goes. If there are, that's a good thing and certainly an improvement over the past. |

soda, yes and no. Some of these details are a little iffy, but I think this'll help...
Nokia is using SyncML so the data format is compatible, but what is missing is the transport protocol--iSync uses IrMC (I think that's what it's called) but Nokia doesn't use IrMC nor does it's Bluetooth stack contain it (I believe that IrMC is being built into the Bluetooth standard). So currently no Nokia devices will work with iSync. However, I suspect that shortly this will change--either from the Nokia end or from the Apple/Mac developer end. For example, there is already software to expand the synching capabilities of iSync with Clies (more functionality than the base iSync functions). Remember: Cingular actually produced all of iSync (except the iPod .mac portions) more or less through a tech partnership so the support focuses on SonyEriccson devices. If Cingular starts supporting other phones and/or Apple can dedicate the resources, I would expect they expand to support other transport protocols beyond IrMC. So, you are right, but I think it's just a matter of time. Nokia, SonyEriccson, et al. are using SyncML... The standard seems to have great potential--enough so that most players are supporting it. Because "ALL" devices are not compatible TODAY isn't really relevant when there are numerous issues still to be resolved in iSync whereas supporting other transport protocols is in comparison a minor issue. |

Ahhh, mostly accurate, but I found this well-written set of posts from a well-informed poster named Traud at Powerpage.org:
GSM Remote Author speaks by: Traud (IP logged) 8/28/2002 - 6:27:51 AM Clear: No. Nokia 7650 and Nokia Communicators only support "SyncML over WAP" which means you need a data conection via your network operator and have an online (internet) SyncML server. iSync works with IrMC (a standard which rised with IrDA). IrMC works on top of the OBEX protocol (another former IrDA standard which Bluetooth adopted). SyncML is also available via an OBEX bearer but Nokia does not support it. The whole Nokia Series60 does not support OBEX GET which is needed for IrMC or "SyncML over OBEX". Consequently there is no way for iSync without a lot of help on Nokia. The Nokia 7650 is highly upgradeable via software. I had a look into the APIs. Bluetooth 1.0b has a IrMC/Sync Bluetooth Profile, too which works the same way as in BT 1.1. BUT if a device supports Bluetooth it does not have to support all profiles. Most of the profiles are "optional" like the IrMC/Sync Bluetooth or a Headset profile. So ask your manufacturer which Bluetooth profiles their devices support. Nokia doesn't support the IrMC/Sync profile. BTW Ericsson R520/T39 also do have BT 1.0b "only". As I said, it'll be up to Nokia to support that profile or for Apple/Cingular/SonyEricsson to support Nokia's profile. |
