.Net may top list of job skills in demand | |

One year ago, the world was still reeling from the raw impact of 11 September and security on every level was a priority. In terms of IT skills, disaster recovery and storage featured prominently, although the chief executive of EMC criticized other storage companies for exploiting the terrorist attacks. Twelve months later the economic downturn in the tech sector continued with talk of recovery being a distant prospect. Job losses have continued on a large scale especially in the telecom sector. WorldCom, Cable & Wireless, Marconi, Siemens, Lucent, Nortel and Orange all cut staff heavily in 2002. | ||

Bits and pieces but nothing major yet. Our programers (so far) love what they're seeing in .NET, but as always withhold reservation until they can only do something in .NET that they can't (easily) do in VB or something else. |

I work for a major Fortune 500 company (it's in the top 10) and they are doing all new development in .NET. There are at least 30 projects that I know of. There are several major corporate-wide initiatives including web services, an ASP.NET server control framework for consistent UIs across the organization as well as globalization, etc.
ASP.NET is going to be huge this year. There will be major adoptions by major companies. Expect to see many more sites with the ".aspx" at the end of their page names. |

This makes me happy. (Partly because I predicted this 2 full years ago, and partly because I spent the last two full years doing nothing but .NET :-)
My company is currently converting their largest product over to 100% .NET... this is major, major development... at least for a company of about 400 employees. When I was looking for a job 6 months ago or so, every interview I had was for a .NET position... and I actually got to turn down a few because of better offers. Compare this to a java buddy of mine who graduated from college last June, and still has no job. Don't get me wrong... there are still lots of Java jobs out there, but they want more experience than most college grads have... while at the same time wanting to only pay you 60k. :-) In .NET, they're willing to pay more (because it's so new) and only expect a year of experience in the technology. (Granted, they want a lot of other experience in addition to the .NET stuff, but they want that with Java too!) |

We're only hiring people who have a minimum of 5 years experience with .NET. :-)

| Soda... we've been doing some hiring around here... and SEVERAL of the people who sent resumes in actually said they had been working with .NET for 4+ years. :-) |
