I think the main thing is really to have a way to manage things as a whole.
The folder view, showing all the pages. But then managing links, so that if you change the name of a page it automatically knows to change links in other pages, etc. I use Frontpage to do all this, and then pretty much hand code the HTML and use the preview functions. But I don't use the frontpage navigation features, buttons and so forth. I've been thinking about getting into this more and buying Dreamweaver or something. |

kevinu - I actually felt Frontpage cleaned up much of it's horrible HTML handling with 2000. Well, that is, if you are just using it as an editor. It no longer tried to mangle your hand coded stuff if you edited it. I don't mind the XP version, anyway.
Granted, the stuff it generated from the wizards was not standard, but it was no worse than some of the other crap people create. BTW... http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.activewin.com%2Fawin%2Fdefault.asp&doctype=%28detect+automatically%29&charset=windows-1250+%28Central+Europe%29 People should use the w3c validator more often, it's interesting some of the things it comes back with. Although I noticed they keep changing the "standard", as my page no longer validates and it used to. Oh, this is interesting... www.slashdot.org refuses connections from the w3c validator. Dreamweaver is the only way to go for me. Unless I'm doing ASP.NET stuff... then I do it in VS.NET because of the handy drag/drop/wizard interface stuff with server controls. (Although VS.NET SUCKS at creating clean HTML, and is even worse from a useability point of view. Ever try highlighting a single cell in a table in VS.NET? I dare ya.)
Dreamweaver is the best WYSIWYG HTML tool I've ever used. It's refined, easy to use, and very powerful. Best of all, the HTML it produces is as good or better as anything I've created by hand... and takes far less time to make. This post was edited by RMD on Monday, December 30, 2002 at 19:57. |

If I drop a button from the toolbar onto a webform, it is a much faster than typing the server control tag by hand. In like manner, if I switch to design view it is much faster to have vs .net create the member declaration for me than typing it in by hand. Automation is automation.
I wouldn't call it a bug that vs .net doesn't generate member declarations for you when you type the server control in by hand. Further, I don't always want member declarations for all of my server controls. I think it would be good to have an option (perhaps from a right click menu) to generate the declaration. To be honest, I find a good deal of the automating of web forms quite annoying. vs .net has a habbit of changing or deleting autogenerated stuff (even when that stuff is event handler plumbing). I'd rather have no generation than screwed up generation. |
