  Tangled in .Net
Time: 08:34 EST/13:34 GMT | News Source: CNET | Posted By: Todd Richardson

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer knows what it's like to be on the hot seat. The company he leads has been under fire for a controversial new licensing program that raised prices considerably for some customers. A high-profile initiative to deliver Web services is on the rocks. And the threat from the open-source Linux operating system is stronger than ever.

But Ballmer can claim some success, too. Windows XP, the company's flagship operating system, has sold well. More than 10 million people have downloaded the latest collection of fixes and updates, called Service Pack 1, according to Microsoft. The company's Visual Studio.Net tools have won rave reviews and wide customer acceptance. And as competitors founder and struggle to make sales, Microsoft sits atop a $40 billion pile of cash. Ballmer sat down with CNET News.com to discuss the next steps for .Net, the challenge of Linux, and Microsoft's bold entry into the enterprise business application market.

"At the end of the day, the IT people and the developers get it quite well. "

Well, except the Linux people. But then, oh yeah.. I guess they aren't really IT people or developers. :-)

"A high-profile initiative to deliver Web services is on the rocks. And the threat from the open-source Linux operating system is stronger than ever."

Web services haven't been delievered and are on the rocks? I guess they mean the .NET My Services, which are an incredibly minor part of the .NET initiative... but who the hell can tell these days.

I think reports who write about technology should be forced to learn about that technology before they start happily typing away.

'its always the same 33-year old disgruntled MS troll who drags everything into a Microsoft vs. Linux argument."

And just like you turn everything into "M$" and decry illegalities even when the story has NOTHING to do with Microsoft, the IT sector, or technology as a whole.

Looks like you're the one who needs to get a life, bucko.

bas - "its always the same 33-year old disgruntled MS troll who drags everything into a Microsoft vs. Linux argument. "

Whose 33?

"get a life."

I like my life.

From sodablue's website:

"Where are you from?

I was born in Chicago, but I've lived in Iowa and Minnesota most of my life."

That explains your correct opinions. Proving that Iowa is, clearly, the proving grounds of geniuses. ;)

mooresa56, cut me some slack, yo. My network is up, there are no viruses to fight, so I got bored, jeez...

STOP FEEDING THE TROLL!

:-)

"I'm using a superior OS here and don't have to "fight viruses"

Linux is vulnerable to viruses, fool. Or didn't you know that? Here's 2 for you, for free:

Li0n and Bliss. Get a clue. Your oh-so-mighty OS is just another target, like any OS.

Hmm, superior OS? Not likely. I can crash the 2.2 and 2.4 kernel with a sound driver. That hasn't happened to me yet on any MS product. I'm not talking there's no sound, I mean a full on kernel panic followed by lockup and death.

...

Oh, and calling me braindead is like your mother trying to remember your father's name, pointless.

"Bad driver I guess? you d1psh1t."

BUZZ! wrong. Try again.

Bas, I am having troubles trying to do some touch ups of a 1gb image with Adobe PhotoShop 7 on my Linux machine. Can you help me figure out whats wrong? ;-)

BTW bas, it's easy to use the google images addon for IE as well. Not to mention, I too have no problems bringing down my 2.4 kernel as well, and it's not a bad driver.

#14 By 37 (66.82.20.150) at 12/27/2002 9:48:30 PM
It doesn't exist :-). In addition, there are not any video drivers available on the linux distro that would be able to redraw a 1gb image in PhotoShop 7 had it existed.

This place really is a steaming pile.

#16 By 37 (66.82.20.150) at 12/27/2002 11:04:12 PM
bas, yes they do. As we speak!

I can upload a sample 1gb image for you to try if you like. Let me know.

MrRoper - It's certainly become that way over the past couple months. First it was mhfm, now it's this bas character. Intelligent life is unable to be found.

#18 By 135 (208.50.206.187) at 12/28/2002 12:50:26 AM
bas - Hey! There's no need for insults!

#19 By 3653 (65.190.70.73) at 12/28/2002 1:13:25 AM
OMG, my first violation of the AW policy, and I have no idea what I did. I used no curse words (not even misspelled ones). I simply told Cthulhu to get a life, because he researched sodablue's website.

Can someone explain?

#20 By 2332 (65.221.182.3) at 12/28/2002 2:11:32 AM
#36 - Actually... when I worked at an advertising agency a long time ago they worked with images approaching 1GB all the time.

Ironically, their Macs crashed quite often when working with that large an image, and so they kept a WinNT machine (which normally sat idol) for working with the really big images.

#21 By 6859 (12.219.44.45) at 12/28/2002 9:43:19 AM
#26, gg, here at work, we routinely use images in Photoshop, Illustrator, and other packages that reach and some even exceed the 1GB mark. The "artists" say they see a difference in resolution when it's printed at like 10' x 10', but I think they're stoned. But that's not my call.

#38, mooresa56, yeah, that seemed unfair too. It's not like you were evil or vulgar or something... odd. Personally, I'm amazed my previous insult to bas ("but ma, he started it!";)) wasn't nuked.

#22 By 1295 (216.84.210.100) at 12/28/2002 5:37:41 PM
I just have to give a shout out to #24 (Cthulhu)

What kind of felch-monkey actually goes looking for a picture of cabbage?!?

hehe I think I wet myself!

#41, gg, get this... 1GB image, Quark XPress, 256MB Ram, PIII 800, Windows 98SE. And the system still runs!
