A growing number of Microsoft Corp. customers are angry and frustrated with what they say are the company's thinly veiled attempts to use its well-publicized security initiative to get them to upgrade or buy new software.

These people are a bunch of whiney, under trained, punks.
"WAH! SP3 fuxored my network!"
"WAH! I use an unsupported 3rd party app to push updates--and it doesn't work anymore!"
I have installed SP3 on a butt-load of PCs, not ONE died in the manner described. User error or failed douwnload.
WU works, it has been around for a LONG time, deal. Why use a 3rd party app when there's a free one right there in front of you that does exactly what you want it to do? Also, never heard of MSDN downloads, where the patches ARE available?
Punks, I tells ya.

"Even funnier, my off warrant car is still subject to safety recalls, why isn't their software subject to something similiar?"
Because if your brakes fail, someone could die; but if you can't fax/print/browse the web or play Balder's Gate, chances are nobody dies. It's a matter of values and comparing apples to oranges.
I personally don't like the anaolgy of cars and computers, too many flaws.

Ok, people claiming they get their cars fixed for free after the warranty is up have got to be on crack if not something stronger. (What's stronger than crack? heroine?)
Is Microsoft worse or better than other companies?
Apple no longer supports any MacOS of version 8.x or earlier. 8.1 was released in 1997. 8.6 in 1999.
Redhat no longer supports any Linux version prior to 6.2, and even that has an EOL of March 2003. In fact Redhat only supports version 8.0 which was just recently released through the end of 2003.
Microsoft has committed to 5 years of support, which would mean they are still supporting products released in 1998 through 2003. If Apple or Redhat had released Windows 2000, you'd currently be unsupported with that OS, much less Win98, Win95, NT4, etc.
Just adding a dose of reality to the ABMers whining.

jvmahon - Ok, so you are proposing regulating the market.
Personally I'm all in favor of that, and have long felt that was the primary way to solve the Microsoft anti-trust trial. It's my belief that what is bad for one company to do is bad for every company to do.
So here's my question. i.e. who supports Linux? Is it your intention to make Linux exempt? Is that fair to consumers?
BTW... "For examples, consider the use of computers and embedded software within hospitals, medical devices, and military equipment. "
Those markets are already regulated. I had assumed we were talking about consumer devices.

bjd145 - I think you misread my statement...
"In fact Redhat only supports version 8.0 which was just recently released through the end of 2003."
I am not saying that Redhat only supports version 8. I am saying that for version 8, redhat only supports it through the end of 2003. I'm clearly missing some punctuation, but give the previous sentence I do not understand how you came to the interpretation you did.
"What I do take issue with is sodablue passing off statements as fact without any proof. "
I take issue with you passing off your misreading of my statements as fact without any proof. I think I deserve an apology! :)
BTW, if you can find any other Linux vendor that offers better support than Redhat, I would like to know. Redhat thus far is best of breed, and personally I think that's pathetic.
